KHO REN House by M+TRO Studio: A Harmonious Blend of Sustainability and Family Living
A sustainable, family-focused home in Hue, Vietnam, blending traditional elements with modern design by M+TRO Studio.
The KHO REN House, designed by M+TRO Studio, is a modern residential project in Hue, Vietnam. Built for a two-generational family, this 260 m² home artfully adapts to challenging site conditions while embracing sustainability, functionality, and warmth.

Design Context
Site Challenges and Opportunities
Located near the An Cuu River, the irregularly shaped land presented design challenges like orientation, limited usable space, and exposure to harsh sunlight. However, the proximity to the river allowed the architects to incorporate natural breezes and optimize ventilation.

Family-Centric Approach
Designed for five family members spanning two generations, the house focuses on creating communal spaces that foster connection, while maintaining privacy where necessary.

Key Design Features
Central Courtyard and Spatial Flow
The spatial layout revolves around a central courtyard, connecting open spaces that promote natural light and air circulation. This courtyard is a hub for family activities, blending traditional Vietnamese design with modern sensibilities.

Dual-Layer West-Facing Facade
To address heat and sun exposure, the west-facing facade features a dual-layer system:
- Green patches: Vertical greenery spanning from ground to rooftop minimizes heat absorption.
- Concrete and brick hanging walls: These suspended elements provide shade, protect from rain, and maintain views of the river.

Sustainable Material Choices
The design emphasizes materials suited to the Vietnamese climate:
- Concrete: Used for durability on weather-exposed facades.
- Steel and glass: Maximize light, ventilation, and modern aesthetics.
- Wood: Adds warmth and complements the minimalist, industrial style.

Sustainability and Functionality
Ventilation and Lighting
Large sliding glass doors and steel grating panels on stairs ensure unobstructed light flow and optimal air circulation. These features minimize energy reliance, maintaining comfort in both hot summers and chilly winters.

Integration with Nature
The use of green walls and open layouts connects the house to its surroundings, offering a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Cultural and Modern Fusion
By drawing inspiration from Hue's local culture and adapting to the contemporary needs of the family, the KHO REN House reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation.

The KHO REN House by M+TRO Studio is a thoughtful architectural response to its environment and the needs of a modern Vietnamese family. With its emphasis on sustainability, family connection, and adaptability, it sets a benchmark for future urban residential projects.
