Breathing New Life Into an Icon of Welsh Heritage
One of the most iconic medieval landmarks in the UK, Caernarfon Castle, has undergone a transformative restoration of its principal gatehouse—King’s Gate—led by Buttress Architects. This ambitious three-year conservation and enhancement project, commissioned by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s heritage body, has not only preserved the historic architecture but also elevated the visitor experience by introducing inclusive and modern amenities, making the site more accessible than ever.



Historic Significance Meets Innovative Design
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, Caernarfon Castle is an enduring symbol of Wales' architectural and cultural heritage. Built by Edward I in the late 13th century, the fortress and its surrounding walled town have stood as a centerpiece of royal and military history. The restoration of King’s Gate, the monumental front entrance to the castle, is a historic first—granting public access to the upper wall walk for the first time in centuries.



A Sensitive and Sustainable Intervention
Respectful of the original medieval structure, the design team implemented a "light touch" architectural approach, introducing bespoke, prefabricated architectural interventions that are both physically and visually separate from the original stonework. These contemporary additions are designed as "furniture" within the existing structure—minimizing impact and offering complete reversibility for future generations.
The enhancements include:
- Three new interior levels
- Accessible public restrooms with Changing Places facilities
- Café, gift shop, and visitor reception
- Interpretive exhibits narrating the story of Caernarfon Castle’s builders
- Staff offices and storage
- Fully glazed lift access to the rooftop for all abilities—a UK first for any similar heritage site

A Castle for All: Inclusive Access and Panoramic Views
One of the project’s standout features is the new rooftop viewing deck, which provides breathtaking panoramas over the castle grounds and surrounding landscape. Equipped with seating areas and accessible via a glazed lift, this modern intervention allows visitors of all physical abilities to engage with the castle in unprecedented ways.



Craftsmanship That Celebrates the Past
The interventions are constructed from Accoya wood, bespoke joinery, and other high-quality, sustainable materials. Every detail—from the Pilkington glass windows to the Sheridan Lifts—honors the original craftsmanship while remaining unmistakably contemporary. This duality reflects the unfinished nature of the medieval structure, making the modern additions feel like a continuation of its evolving story.



Preserving the Past: Expert Conservation Works
In tandem with new construction, extensive conservation work was carried out. This includes:
- Masonry cleaning and repair
- Repointing of original stone joints
- Removal of invasive vegetation
- Restoration of medieval window tracery
These efforts ensure that Caernarfon Castle remains a resilient symbol of heritage for future generations.
