Kovo 11 Park by Inout.designstudio: Revitalizing Urban Nature and Community Life in Kaunas
Kovo 11 Park by Inout.designstudio revitalizes Kaunas’ urban landscape with inclusive design, diverse recreation zones, and vibrant community spaces.
In the heart of Kaunas, Lithuania, Kovo 11 Park by Inout.designstudio stands as a model of contemporary urban landscape regeneration. Spanning 6,932 square meters, the renewed park transforms a once underutilized green space into a vibrant, multifunctional hub that supports leisure, recreation, and social interaction for residents and visitors alike.

This project redefines the role of city parks in dense urban environments—balancing ecology, accessibility, and community presence through meticulous spatial design and cohesive landscape planning.
A New Urban Landscape for Kaunas
Located in the Griciupis district on the right bank of the Nemunas River, Kovo 11 Park is surrounded by a richly layered urban context—residential buildings, public institutions, commercial areas, and natural elements all frame its perimeter. The transformation addresses the complex needs of this mixed neighborhood, where density and livability demand careful integration between green infrastructure and public amenities.

Before its reconstruction, the park suffered from several deficiencies: uneven pathways, limited accessibility for people with disabilities, poor lighting, insufficient greenery, and a lack of programmed spaces for play or rest. Inout.designstudio’s intervention reimagines the site from the ground up—introducing infrastructure that is inclusive, safe, and multifunctional, while celebrating the identity of the surrounding city landscape.

Designing for Everyone: Leisure, Play, and Social Connection
The park has been restructured around three essential principles—recreation, connectivity, and community engagement. Designed for both passive and active use, the new layout harmonizes different spatial zones to accommodate diverse users and activities.

- Active Recreation Zones: Equipped with climbing structures, swing sets, sports courts, a labyrinth-style play area, and in-ground trampolines, these spaces nurture physical activity and social interaction among children and families.
- Rest and Relaxation Areas: Pergolas, hammocks, shaded seating, and scenic lawns invite visitors to sit, unwind, or simply enjoy the rhythm of city life.
- Interactive Spaces: Playful installations and sensory features foster creativity and learning for younger visitors, enriching the park’s educational dimension.

The park’s central plaza—anchored by a water fountain, pergola-covered seating areas, and educational plantings—acts as the community’s civic heart. This focal point connects seamlessly to the outer recreational zones, creating a fluid and intuitive circulation pattern through the landscape.
Integrated Design and Accessibility
Accessibility was a defining goal of the redesign. The park now offers three main entrances—one to the south and two to the east—alongside secondary access points from the north and west. A bicycle path along Kovo 11 Street, paved pedestrian routes, and adjacent public transport stops enhance connectivity for all age groups and mobility levels.

These interventions ensure that the park does not stand as an isolated green area but becomes an active component of Kaunas’ urban mobility network, linking daily movement with moments of rest and interaction.

Materiality, Safety, and Ecological Renewal
Functionality merges with aesthetic and environmental consciousness. Durable, locally sourced materials ensure low maintenance and weather resilience, while the new lighting system provides enhanced safety during evening hours.

The landscape itself has been regenerated with new lawns, trees, and shrubs, revitalizing biodiversity and improving microclimatic conditions in the surrounding area. Surfaces and slopes are articulated with natural textures that encourage play while managing water runoff safely. Each detail—from the placement of benches and bins to the organization of playground equipment—has been chosen to combine environmental sustainability with user comfort.

A Park That Reflects Community Identity
Inout.designstudio designed Kovo 11 Park not merely as a green space but as a social condenser—a shared environment that activates collective participation across generations. Its multipurpose character allows for both everyday use and civic gatherings, reinforcing a spirit of community ownership and belonging.

By incorporating small architectural structures, open lawns, and thoughtfully designed playgrounds, the project delicately captures the essence of Kaunas’ local context—respecting the city’s scale while introducing a contemporary language of urban renewal.

Transforming Urban Green Spaces
The redevelopment of Kovo 11 Park demonstrates how landscape architecture can drive social and ecological change in dense urban areas. Here, design becomes both infrastructure and experience—a connective tissue that binds neighborhood identity, well-being, and sustainability.

It serves as a valuable precedent for post-Soviet cityscapes, illustrating how careful landscape design can reclaim neglected land, foster inclusion, and redefine the cultural meaning of public green space.
