La Guiara Colomos Building by GONZALEZFRANCO Arquitectura and Trópico de Arquitectura: A Fusion of Nature and Modern Architecture

La Guiara Colomos Building, designed by GONZALEZFRANCO Arquitectura in collaboration with Trópico de Arquitectura, is an innovative residential complex situated in Guadalajara, Mexico. This building is uniquely positioned near the Colomos Forest and the Atemajac River, benefitting from a natural microclimate. Completed in 2023, the building spans 1,667 square meters and offers a blend of modern architecture with nature-focused design principles.

Design Philosophy: Integrating with Nature

The architects, Olmo Bonilla Carrascal and Pedro González Franco, crafted La Guiara Colomos with a central design concept focused on adapting the building to its immediate environment. With large balconies, open terraces, and strategic spatial planning, the building is designed to bring the outdoors inside, enhancing the living experience by maximizing natural views and light.

Building Composition and Layout

The La Guiara Colomos Building consists of 11 residential units arranged over four levels, including:

• 2 townhouses
• 6 apartments (2 per level)
• 3 studios (1 per level)

Additionally, a fifth-floor terrace serves as a shared space for residents, providing a panoramic view of Guadalajara’s urban and natural landscapes. This mix of units offers a diverse range of living spaces that blend privacy with community areas.

Materials and Aesthetic

Exterior Material Selection

The material palette of La Guiara Colomos is inspired by the regional soil tones, specifically Jal (limestone/sandstone), which creates a subtle, natural color scheme. The exterior is crafted with concrete to reflect a minimalist yet robust character, while the interior spaces incorporate marble, stone cobblestones, and oak wood for added warmth and sophistication.

Architectural Details

One of the defining architectural elements of the La Guiara Colomos Building is the lattice wall at the main entrance. Designed to interrupt the rhythmic facade, this wall is enhanced with an artistic intervention by local artist Francisco Ugarte. This feature serves as both a focal point and a cultural bridge, merging local art with architecture in a way that adds depth to the building’s character.
