Architectural Concept and Design Philosophy
LAXUS House is a refined example of minimalist Japanese residential architecture, situated in a quiet suburban neighborhood near downtown Ota City. Designed by APOLLO Architects & Associates, the home stands out for its striking geometric form: two stacked cubic volumes in contrasting materials. The lower level features exposed concrete formed with Japanese cedar plank patterns, while the upper level is clad in composite lumber, lending both warmth and texture to the exterior.
The second-floor wooden volume extends 2.7 meters beyond the base, creating a dramatic cantilever over the parking area. This column-free overhang is both a bold architectural gesture and a functional solution, maximizing space while maintaining openness at the ground level.

Privacy and Seclusion in Urban Living
Given its corner lot position, privacy was a key design priority. The first-floor master bedroom and children’s bedroom are wrapped within tall concrete walls, shielding them from street views. The cedar formwork imprint on the concrete not only adds subtle visual interest but also ties the architecture to Japan’s woodworking heritage.

Second-Floor Living – Light, Space, and Connection
The living, dining, kitchen, and bathroom spaces occupy the second floor, arranged to foster both openness and intimacy. The layout incorporates a low-ceilinged kitchen for a sense of coziness, transitioning into a high-ceilinged dining and living area that feels expansive and bright. This interplay of ceiling heights creates distinct atmospheres within the shared space.
A standout feature is the adjacent outdoor living terrace, furnished with exterior seating and lush potted plants. This area blurs the line between inside and outside, offering a private yet airy retreat. From the bathroom, the terrace view adds a spa-like element to daily routines.

Natural Light and Interior Atmosphere
Light plays a central role in the spatial experience. A north-facing skylight above the living room introduces a soft, diffuse glow that cascades down the staircase, reaching the first-floor entrance. The private courtyard further enhances the home’s natural illumination, ensuring that even secluded areas feel bright and open.

Material Palette and Interior Styling
The interior is crafted with walnut ceilings, taupe-toned walls, and sleek modern Italian furnishings. The combination of rich wood tones, neutral finishes, and curated lighting creates a tranquil, sophisticated atmosphere. Every detail — from the kitchen island’s multipurpose functionality to the deliberate integration of outdoor space — reflects a commitment to both aesthetic purity and practical living.
