LET'S MAKE THE CITY GREEN AGAIN!
Green Deer Belfast
Concept
Nature is conceptually the focus of this project. Therefore, various aspects related to the natural environment run through all areas to bring nature at its best back to the city. The colorful garden with its diverse flora and a small body of water provides habitat, shelter and a food source for a variety of animals such as insects, birds and aquatic life. It also aims to provide access to nature for all people in the city. For this reason, the project is designed to be barrier-free, with wide paths and a stair lift at the entrance and exit. So that an attractive public space is created for everyone. In addition, the project represents a place where nature can be experienced with all the senses. The barefoot path makes different materials tangible and creates a place that is both fun and educational, especially for children. Quiet seating areas make it possible to concentrate on the natural sounds of nature. The café serves as both a meeting place and a retreat, where food and beverages from regional and sustainable vendors are offered. The public multipurpose space can be used for smaller events such as poetry slams, small concerts or readings. This can be adapted with the appropriate furniture and can also serve as an extension of the café in good weather when no event is taking place. Nature is also reflected in this area. The floor is entirely grass and concrete walkways or similar have been eliminated. The structure over the multipurpose room provides both shade and shelter in case of rain. Flower pots of various sizes can be moved around so that the area can be made freer or more atmospheric depending on how it is used. Events will also promote regional and largely unknown artists while providing access to art for all in a natural setting.
Intent
This project intends to serve as both a public and attractive space for all people in the city that also has a utility value for the city. Green roofs provide many benefits in the city concerning climate change. These include air purification, which is especially important in densely populated cities. In addition, heat can be regulated by reducing temperature fluctuations on the roofs. A green roof is also preferable to a normal roof in the event of heavy rainfall or hail. The infiltration on the roof can save the sewage system and saves costs, and energy and prevents flooding on the streets. The solar panels on the roof of the café have the purpose to store renewable energy and use it as lighting for the roof terrace.
Design and materials
The simple design with playful details was chosen to harmoniously fit into and flatter the natural environment. Practical aspects were taken into account, such as the long counter, which offers space for 12 people inside and creates a pleasant opportunity to engage in conversation with others. Nevertheless, there are also seats in the multifunctional area that allow privacy.
The red deer is a well-known animal in the forests of Northern Ireland and was chosen as the logo for the design because it is a graceful, proud creature in nature, yet needs protection and is increasingly endangered by humans and climate change. It symbolizes the beauty, but also the fragility of nature and shows that it is worth protecting and nurturing - even in the city!
Expansion plan
The project serves as a model for the city to encourage people to develop more green roofs, as they offer both a utility value and an educational effect, as well as being a feast for the eyes of city dwellers.
