Living in Harmony with the Changing Seasons – Architrip Inc.
A serene Yonezawa vacation home by Architrip Inc., blending traditional Japanese design, seasonal views, reclaimed wood, and immersive mountain living.
Nestled in the serene mountains of Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, Living in Harmony with the Changing Seasons by Architrip Inc. is a vacation home that masterfully blends traditional Japanese design with modern comfort. Completed in 2025, this 137 m² residence offers a tranquil retreat for the client from Miami, USA, providing an immersive experience of Japan’s changing seasons.

Embracing Japan’s Natural Landscape
Located in a lush, mountainous region, the home celebrates the unique Japanese scenery that captivated the client. Unlike urban Miami, this retreat allows occupants to fully experience seasonal transitions, local climate, and panoramic mountain views. The design encourages a deep connection with nature while providing a comfortable, contemporary living environment.

Bridging Cultures through Design
The entrance opens to a kitchen and dining area that blends the traditional Japanese doma (earthen-floored space) with Western “shoe-on” culture. This cultural fusion creates a welcoming space that evokes a sense of global architecture, inviting exploration and interaction.
Inspired by the flexibility of tatami rooms, sliding doors and screens allow spatial adaptation, accommodating multiple guests or seasonal changes in lifestyle.

Interior Layout and Spatial Flow
Centered around a core pillar, the first-floor layout reverses the conventional interior-exterior relationship. The inner veranda connects to the doma space, while the outer veranda opens to a Japanese garden, forming a cross-shaped design that blurs boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.
Shoji screens with glass panels (snow-viewing shoji) provide filtered views of the garden, creating a serene and ever-changing atmosphere as the seasons shift.

Materials, Light, and Atmosphere
The kitchen-dining area features reclaimed cedar and reed materials, soft fragrances, and exposed structural elements. Windows are designed not only for light but also to frame seasonal views, offering dynamic perspectives of nearby trees and distant mountains. This intentional approach to materials and natural light enhances the immersive experience of Japanese living.

A Cultural and Seasonal Retreat
This project integrates nostalgic and culturally resonant materials, emphasizing Japanese traditions, seasonal awareness, and architectural flexibility. It is a space designed to celebrate the natural world while providing comfort and versatility, creating a true retreat in harmony with the changing seasons.
