Locke at East Side Gallery by Grzywinski+Pons: A Contemporary Landmark in Berlin
Locke at East Side Gallery blends history and modernity, offering a transformative hospitality experience with sustainable materials, artistic elements, and urban connectivity.
Locke at East Side Gallery, designed by the renowned architectural studio Grzywinski+Pons, is a striking 176-room hotel that seamlessly integrates hospitality, culture, and design. Situated in Berlin's dynamic Friedrichshain neighborhood, this project stands at the intersection of history and modernity, overlooking the iconic East Side Gallery—the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall, now transformed into an open-air canvas of artistic expression.

A Space Rooted in History and Transformation
The East Side Gallery is a powerful symbol of cultural rebirth, an architectural relic once representing division but now celebrating artistic freedom. Inspired by this transformation, Grzywinski+Pons envisioned Locke at East Side Gallery as more than just a hotel—it is a space for exchange, interaction, and creativity. Positioned between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, the hotel acts as a liminal zone, blending elements of public and private, residential and transient, art and commerce.

Seamless Integration with Urban Context
The ground floor is designed as an open, flowing space, fostering connection between the bustling Mühlenstrasse and the tranquil River Spree. Through a carefully curated architectural language, the hotel reimagines spatial boundaries using fragmented walls reminiscent of the Berlin Wall itself. These non-continuous partitions create fluid zones, allowing visibility, accessibility, and natural movement while preserving an intimate ambiance within the co-working spaces, cafe, bar, and lounge areas.

Materiality and Design Philosophy
Grzywinski+Pons embraced a layered approach to materials, establishing a tactile contrast between robust architectural elements and softer, inviting textures. The structural envelope features exposed concrete and expansive glass facades, fostering transparency and engagement with the surroundings. Locally sourced bricks composed of recycled sand and lime form the built-in seating and planters, reinforcing sustainable design principles. The interplay between industrial finishes and warm, organic materials—such as timber, onyx, zellige tiles, and plaster—creates a welcoming yet refined aesthetic.

Sculptural and Artistic References
A key design feature of the hotel is a series of sculptural totems inspired by the former BT-6 Watchtowers that once lined the Berlin Wall. These reinterpretations, scattered throughout the interiors, function as artistic elements rather than symbols of control, celebrating the transformation of Berlin’s past into a future of creative expression.

Guest Rooms: A Study in Liminality and Comfort
The guest rooms at Locke at East Side Gallery continue the architectural narrative of thresholds and fluidity. The building’s linear footprint dictates a dual aspect experience: rooms facing north open to the vibrancy of Mühlenstrasse and the East Side Gallery, while those facing south offer serene views of the Spree River and Kreuzberg’s low-rise skyline.
A defining element within each room is a multifunctional timber-paneled wall, integrating essential functions such as storage, kitchen facilities, and mechanical systems. A standout feature of this partition is a sliding kiln-formed glass panel, designed to echo the flowing surface of the Spree. The contrast between the translucent, textured glass and the adjacent smoked black-glass elements alludes to Berlin’s enigmatic charm—offering glimpses of transparency while maintaining mystery.

Material Palette and Sensory Experience
The interiors balance industrial rawness with crafted sophistication. Exposed concrete walls and ceilings are softened by hand-scraped wood flooring and plush ultra-matte upholstery in neutral tones. Overhead, delicate blush-toned discs provide a gentle contrast to the exposed slab, while layers of suede, rattan, and braided grass rugs introduce depth and warmth.
Custom-designed furniture further enriches the spatial experience, with turmeric-colored chairs, pastel-framed mirrors, and sculptural lighting fixtures that cast ambient pools of light. The overall design encourages both solitude and social interaction, allowing guests to experience Berlin’s unique duality—where history and modernity, energy and tranquility, exist in perfect harmony.

A New Architectural Dialogue in Berlin
Locke at East Side Gallery is more than just a hotel; it is a thoughtful architectural response to Berlin’s evolving identity. By merging historical context with contemporary sensibilities, Grzywinski+Pons have created a space that embodies connection, transformation, and artistic expression. It is a place where travelers and locals alike can engage in the city's ever-changing narrative—whether together-together or alone together.
