A Landmark of Landscape-Integrated Architecture in Chengdu

Perched at the highest point of Chengdu, the Longquan Mountain Observatory redefines the relationship between architecture and landscape. Designed by BUZZ/Büro Ziyu Zhuang, this visionary project seamlessly merges with its surroundings, ensuring that the built environment coexists with the natural topography rather than dominating it. By adopting an organic, flowing form, the observatory embodies the principles of landscape-integrated architecture, where design and nature interact harmoniously.

Architectural Concept and Site Integration

The observatory’s design approach ensures that the structure becomes an extension of the mountain itself. Instead of imposing a rigid form onto the landscape, the architecture follows the terrain’s natural contours. The horizontally oriented structure responds to the expansive views of the Chengdu Plain, creating a series of cascading platforms that dissolve into the environment. These platforms are connected through a network of courtyards, allowing natural light and ventilation to penetrate deep into the building.

A Roof That Becomes the Landscape

One of the defining features of the Longquan Mountain Observatory is its dynamic roofscape. The structure’s roof is paved with natural stones of varying sizes, creating a textured surface that will gradually be enveloped by vegetation. Over time, this evolving green layer will enhance the illusion of the building as an organic extension of the mountain. The undulating rooftop also serves as a pedestrian pathway, transforming into an open viewing platform that offers breathtaking panoramic vistas.

Water as a Design Element

The integration of water into the observatory’s design enhances its visual and sensory impact. A continuous water surface beneath the roof merges with the landscaped pool, creating a reflective plane that captures the sky and dissolves into the horizon. This element not only blurs the boundary between built and natural environments but also reinforces the meditative quality of the space. The restaurant and multi-purpose hall are positioned along this open vista, ensuring that visitors experience the landscape from every angle.

Blending Boldness with Subtlety

From certain perspectives, the Longquan Mountain Observatory evokes the imagery of a spaceship or an alien form preparing for takeoff. However, its design remains deeply respectful of the surrounding landscape. It functions as a natural fold in the terrain or a floating bridge hidden within the forest canopy. The project achieves a delicate balance between striking visual identity and understated integration with nature, ensuring that it enhances rather than disrupts its setting.

Sustainable and Functional Design

Beyond its aesthetic and conceptual strength, the observatory prioritizes sustainability and functionality. Serving functions, including logistics and support areas, are discreetly positioned beneath the eaves or integrated into the site, maintaining a clean and unobtrusive exterior. The open circulation and use of natural materials further contribute to the project’s environmental responsiveness, making it a model for sustainable, landscape-integrated architecture.
