LOW Architecten Builds a School Around a Sheltered Garden for Children with Autism in Belgium
In Opwijk, the Maria Assumpta Institute reimagines educational space through calm enclosure, sensory clarity, and a rooftop sports field.
Most school buildings optimize for throughput: corridors funnel crowds, bells trigger mass movement, and playgrounds are open expanses of noise. For children on the autism spectrum, this default environment can be hostile. The Maria Assumpta Institute in Opwijk, designed by LOW Architecten for 140 students, starts from the opposite premise. Every spatial decision, from the L-shaped plan wrapping an enclosed garden to the rooftop sports court lifted away from ground-level commotion, is calibrated to reduce sensory overload while preserving the social richness that makes school worthwhile.
The result is a 3,500-square-meter building that feels simultaneously protective and generous. Commissioned by the Archdiocese of Mechelen to replace outdated facilities in nearby Heiveld, the school sits on a former monastery site along Kloosterstraat. Its organizing principle is the hortus conclusus, the enclosed garden, a medieval typology that LOW Architecten repurposes here not for contemplation but for regulated calm. Classrooms, kitchens, a refectory, offices, and a subterranean sports hall all radiate from this central courtyard, giving every program a visual anchor in green space rather than in the corridor.
The Green Threshold



From Kloosterstraat, the building reads as two distinct registers: a white steel colonnade at ground level and a green-tiled upper volume set back behind newly planted trees. The colonnade performs double duty, acting as both a covered entry sequence and a visual buffer that slows the transition from street to school. Mesh screens at the entrance portico filter views without blocking them, a detail that hints at the architects' broader strategy of managed transparency. You always know where you are relative to the outside, but the outside never intrudes uninvited.
The green tile cladding is worth noting for what it is not: it is not loud, not whimsical, not trying to signal "children's building" through saturated color. It is quiet, uniform, and slightly recessive behind foliage. For a school designed around sensory sensitivity, this restraint is itself a design argument.
The Enclosed Garden as Organizing Device


The narrow courtyard between the green-tiled facade and the white colonnade is not a leftover gap. It is the project's most deliberate space. Young trees, hard paving, and the proximity of two contrasting facades create an outdoor room that is sheltered from wind and noise but open to the sky. For students who struggle with unstructured outdoor environments, this proportioned enclosure offers a middle ground between inside and outside.
The covered walkway along the colonnade extends this logic, giving students a route through the school that is outdoors but protected. Concrete columns and a timber-slat ceiling define the path without walls, so orientation is always legible. You can see the courtyard garden, the entrance, and the upper floors simultaneously. There is no moment of spatial confusion, no dead-end corridor, no abrupt transition.
Covered Circulation and Sensory Legibility



Circulation in this building is never ambiguous. The covered walkway with its exposed timber slats gives a clear visual rhythm, while the yellow central staircase punches through two levels in bright, even light. Color is used sparingly but functionally: the staircase's yellow finish makes vertical movement instantly identifiable from any adjacent room. A concrete stairwell elsewhere in the building uses a large window to frame a courtyard view, turning the act of descending into a moment of reorientation rather than disorientation.
For neurotypical users, these are pleasant details. For children with ASD, they are structural necessities. Predictability in spatial sequence reduces anxiety. LOW Architecten achieves this not through signage or wayfinding graphics but through the architecture itself: material changes, color cues, and constant visual access to the central garden.
The Sports Hall Below, the Sports Field Above



The underground sports hall is one of the building's strongest interiors. White lattice timber trusses span the ceiling, and chequered brick panels on the upper walls break up what could be a relentlessly hard acoustic environment. Large windows, unusual for a subterranean gym, pull natural light into the space. The material palette, white timber against warm brick, is consistent with the rest of the school, so the hall does not feel like a separate world.
Above it all, a rooftop sports court sits behind white steel framing and mesh netting. The decision to place active recreation on the roof is pragmatic (the tight site demanded it) but also strategic: it separates the loudest program from the classrooms and quiet zones at lower levels. From the court, students look out over low-rise Opwijk rooftops rather than down into the courtyard, maintaining the garden's status as a calm enclosure.
Interior Warmth Without Excess



The refectory on the ground floor achieves a warmth that most institutional dining halls cannot manage. Pale pink chairs, globe pendant lights, and a glass-enclosed stairwell that admits indirect light from adjacent spaces all contribute to an atmosphere that is domestic in scale without being precious. A kitchen pass-through window, framed in white tile with a teal surround, provides a small jolt of color that reads as deliberate rather than decorative.
The rooftop terrace, separate from the sports court, offers a quieter counterpart. Concrete planters with young trees create a garden in miniature at the building's highest point. It is a decompression space, a place where students can step out of classroom routines without leaving the school's protected perimeter. The proximity of this terrace to the first-floor teaching kitchens and quiet refectories suggests that LOW Architecten thought carefully about which programs benefit from adjacency to open air.
Plans and Drawings

The isometric drawing confirms what the photographs imply: the L-shaped volume wraps tightly around the central courtyard, with the colonnade forming a porous edge along one side. Underground programs, including the sports hall, changing rooms, and storage, are tucked beneath the courtyard footprint, keeping the above-grade profile compact. The drawing also reveals the rooftop court as a distinct datum, set apart from the terrace gardens by the steel cage structure visible in the exterior photos.
Why This Project Matters
Designing for neurodivergent users does not require a separate architectural language. It requires a more disciplined version of the same language good architecture already speaks: legible circulation, controlled transitions, material consistency, and spatial proportions that reduce rather than amplify sensory input. LOW Architecten demonstrates that these priorities produce a building that is better for everyone, not just the students it was designed for. The Maria Assumpta Institute is a school where calm is structural, not imposed by rules or soundproofing.
The project also makes a case for the hortus conclusus as a viable contemporary typology, particularly on constrained urban sites where open landscape is not an option. By folding playground, courtyard, terrace, and rooftop court into the building's own section, LOW Architecten fits a full range of outdoor experiences into a dense footprint. For school design more broadly, this vertical stacking of outdoor programs offers a model worth studying.
