Industrial architecture rarely gets the opportunity to be generous with its occupants. The Metallic Bellows Factory Office by KSM Architecture takes that opportunity seriously, deploying a language of repeating brick vaults and interior courtyards that turn a utilitarian brief into a spatial experience worth lingering in. The building is not merely an office attached to a factory; it is an argument that workplaces adjacent to production lines deserve the same tectonic ambition as any civic or cultural project.
What makes the project genuinely compelling is the structural logic of those vaults. The scalloped brick shells are not decorative appliqué. They serve simultaneously as roof, canopy, and environmental mediator, filtering light and channeling breezes across a series of planted courts that puncture the plan. The result is a building that breathes, both literally and architecturally, turning what could have been a sealed box on an industrial plot into a porous network of inside and outside.
A Vaulted Canopy as Organizing Principle



The radiating brick vaults define every major experience in the building. Walk beneath them and you encounter a rhythm that is almost musical: the scalloped edges rise and fall, framing views of central lawns and planted beds. The structural repetition gives the plan a legibility that needs no signage. You know where you are because the vaults orient you, pulling your eye along paved paths toward glazed interiors at the far end.
Materially, the choice of exposed brick keeps the building honest about its industrial context. There is no attempt to disguise the factory setting with slick cladding. Instead, the vaults celebrate the craft of masonry, relying on the compression geometry of the shells rather than concealed reinforcement to achieve their spans. It is a move that respects the skill of local labor and makes the construction process visible in the finished form.
Courtyards That Work Harder Than They Look



The internal courtyards do far more than provide a pleasant view from a desk. They introduce daylight deep into the plan, create stack ventilation pathways, and break the building's mass into smaller, more human-scaled zones. At dusk, the glazed walls surrounding these courts glow, turning each one into a lantern that signals activity without exposing occupants to the full glare of the Indian sun.
The planting within the courts is deliberate rather than decorative: central lawn beds are bordered by low shrubs and young trees that will, over time, transform the character of these spaces. The brick paving around them establishes a continuity between interior corridors and outdoor ground, so the transition from workspace to garden happens almost without you noticing.
Perforated Screens and the Industrial Perimeter



The building's perimeter negotiates the boundary between office life and factory surroundings with a layered strategy. Perforated brick screens filter views and sunlight, while a steel frame and corrugated metal parapet signal the industrial program honestly. Young climbing plants are already beginning to colonize the exposed steelwork, hinting at a future where the hard edges will soften considerably.
A succulent garden and stone stepping path along one edge of the building offer a quieter counterpoint to the arched colonnade on the opposite side. The long brick boundary wall with its arched bays reads almost like a cloister, establishing a threshold between the noise of production and the relative calm of the office precinct. It is a practical solution dressed in civic dignity.
Interior Life Under the Vaults


Inside, the conference room reveals how the vaulted ceiling translates at close range. The exposed brick curvature overhead gives the room a warmth and acoustic softness that flat concrete would never achieve. A full-height glazed wall opens the room to the lawn, collapsing the boundary between meeting space and garden. It is a detail that makes the act of gathering feel less transactional and more grounded.

The exposed frame visible at the perimeter wall shows how the steel skeleton and brick infill work together, each material handling the loads it does best.

The vaults are simultaneously roof, shading device, ventilation driver, and spatial identity.
