Mezcalería Maguey – A Sensory Journey into Mezcal Culture
Mezcalería Maguey blends earthy textures, vaulted interiors, and intimate spaces, creating an immersive, artisanal mezcal-tasting experience in Morelia.
Concept: Crafting an Authentic Mezcal Experience
Mezcalería Maguey is an immersive architectural intervention nestled within a bustling commercial plaza in Morelia. The primary design objective was to dissociate visitors from the commercial environment and create a space that reflects the artisanal and cultural significance of mezcal. Inspired by the rich tradition of mezcal-making, the space was conceived as an intimate, underground-like environment, echoing the way certain mezcals are buried during production.

Design Philosophy: Earthy Tones and Subterranean Atmosphere
The interior design embraces earthy tones and raw textures, achieved through polished cement walls and custom partitions. The rectangular site, featuring flat roofs and exposed metal structures, was transformed to evoke a sense of depth and intimacy. By manipulating horizontal and vertical axes, the architects introduced a cross vault, dividing the area into dynamic zones with distinct atmospheres.

Layout: A Journey Through Light and Shadow
From the exterior, the warm, inviting glow of Mezcalería Maguey subtly emerges from the plaza aisles. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a vaulted central space housing the bar, designed with hand-sculpted cavities reminiscent of the mezcal digging process. Behind the bar, the kitchen is discreetly hidden, maintaining the focus on the tasting experience.
Two intimate side areas flank the central vault, each dedicated to regional mezcal selections. The arrangement prioritizes shadow and light interplay, cultivating a contemplative, sensory-rich environment.

Celebrating Mezcal Craftsmanship
The project reflects a deep respect for mezcal and its artisanal heritage, championed by a family led by a master mezcalero. Every architectural element, from textures to lighting, aims to honor the tradition and elevate the mezcal-tasting experience.
