Modern Mountain Cottage Design: Milada Cottage by ADR
Explore the Milada Cottage, a modern mountain retreat blending traditional design with contemporary materials and functionality.
Nestled within the serene Krkonoše Mountains in Malá Úpa, Czech Republic, the Milada Cottage exemplifies the harmonious integration of modern architecture with traditional mountain aesthetics. Designed by Aleš Lapka and Petr Kolář from ADR, the cottage redefines the classic mountain retreat with its minimalist form, thoughtful use of materials, and a layout catering to both functionality and comfort. Completed in 2023, this 221-square-meter structure beautifully blends contemporary design with the surrounding natural landscape.

The Context and Location
Situated at the edge of Nové Domky, a region characterized by scattered cottage developments, the Milada Cottage seamlessly complements the existing architectural vernacular. Positioned on a sloping hillside, the structure’s rectangular floor plan is oriented horizontally to blend with the terrain. Its placement offers breathtaking views while respecting the traditional layout of mountain cottages in the region.

Architectural Form and Exterior Design
The Milada Cottage adopts a simple yet impactful form, defined by a lower rectangular base and a gable roof that integrates upper living spaces. This timeless silhouette pays homage to the traditional mountain cottages of the Krkonoše region while incorporating modern materials and design elements. The lower section of the building is constructed using brick walls, while the upper gabled roof and beamed ceiling are crafted from wood. Exposed concrete is used for the outdoor extensions, providing durability and a touch of modernity to the otherwise warm and rustic exterior.

Interior Layout and Functionality
The cottage is designed as a short-term rental property, with its layout optimized for practicality and comfort. The interior is divided into two distinct levels, each offering a unique function:

Lower Floor
The ground floor houses the main living area, including a kitchen and dining room, which serve as the central hub for social interaction. Adjacent to these spaces are the entrance and necessary facilities such as storage and utility areas. A concrete pillar subtly demarcates the dining area from the living space, adding a structural and aesthetic element to the open layout.

Upper Floor and Sleeping Spaces
The upper floor is dedicated to rest and relaxation, featuring bedrooms and accompanying sanitary facilities. Each bedroom connects to the sleeping floor located within the gabled roof via separate staircases, offering additional sleeping spaces for guests. This design maximizes the use of vertical space while ensuring privacy and functionality.

Material Palette and Interior Aesthetics
The interiors of the Milada Cottage exude warmth and simplicity, thanks to the extensive use of natural materials. The walls and ceilings are clad in lightly bleached spruce wood, creating a cohesive and calming atmosphere. This wooden aesthetic is complemented by black armchairs, brown chairs, and a stainless-steel kitchen, which adds a modern edge to the rustic charm.

The flooring on the lower level alternates between wood, screed, and carpets, enhancing texture and comfort. The upper sleeping floor features carpeting, ensuring a cozy environment. The furniture, like the structural elements, is predominantly made of bleached spruce wood, further emphasizing the cottage’s commitment to natural materials.

Outdoor Connectivity
A key feature of the Milada Cottage is its direct access to the surrounding environment. In winter, guests can step directly onto an adjacent ski slope from the lower floor, highlighting the seamless integration of the property with its surroundings. The outdoor extensions, made of exposed concrete, provide covered access areas that enhance the functionality of the space.

A Testament to Modern Mountain Living
The Milada Cottage by ADR stands as a shining example of modern mountain cottage design, balancing traditional forms with contemporary sensibilities. Its thoughtful layout, sustainable material choices, and seamless integration into the natural landscape make it a standout architectural achievement.

For those seeking inspiration in blending traditional mountain aesthetics with modern functionality, the Milada Cottage offers an exemplary blueprint for achieving this harmony.
