Modern Ski Chalet Design: The T+L Residence by DESK Architectes

An Architectural Retreat in Bromont, Canada

Nestled on the ski slopes of Bromont in Canada’s Eastern Townships, the T+L Residence is a striking architectural project by DESK Architectes. Designed to replace an aging chalet, this 400 m² modern home combines contemporary aesthetics with functional design, catering to the needs of a large multi-generational family.

The residence blends seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape, creating a welcoming retreat where family members can gather while enjoying privacy and luxury. Its design embraces the constraints of the site, offering innovative solutions that balance functionality and beauty.

Design and Site Challenges

The site presented several challenges, including an uneven gradient, proximity to a busy street corner, and restrictive building setback regulations. The architects tackled these constraints with a design comprising two interconnected T-shaped volumes, strategically positioned to maximize the plot's potential.

The primary volume, oriented perpendicular to the street, faces the ski slopes and houses the residence’s core functions. This three-story structure features dormitories and a family room in the basement, an open-plan living space on the first floor, and a serene master suite upstairs.

The secondary volume, parallel to the street, serves practical purposes. It accommodates a garage, a spacious mudroom, and a welcoming entrance hall that connects the two volumes while providing direct access to the ski slopes.

Interior Design and Layout

The interior of the T+L Residence is designed to encourage family interaction while preserving privacy. A central staircase serves as the backbone of the house, acoustically isolating each level. The first floor features an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with expansive windows that frame views of the backyard.

A double-height fireplace becomes the focal point of the central living space, adding warmth and character. The staircase, framed by low walls, creates a striking visual feature, while the upstairs walkway balustrade ensures openness without compromising privacy.

The kitchen is thoughtfully designed with a large island, an extended countertop, and framed windows that offer picturesque views of the surrounding trees. A hidden prep area ensures the main kitchen remains uncluttered, even during large gatherings.

Material Palette and Aesthetic

The material palette of the T+L Residence highlights contrasts between light and dark tones, with textured finishes that capture the rustic charm of a mountain retreat. Built-in furniture enhances functionality while contributing to the cozy atmosphere of the home.

The geometry of the house, characterized by its two white volumes and unique rooflines, reflects the jagged peaks of the nearby mountains. Inside, the ambiance evokes the warm and inviting spirit of an après-ski chalet, making it an ideal retreat after a day on the slopes.
