Mühle Shaving Offices by Atelier ST | Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH
Sustainable timber-built office with shimmering aluminum facade, uniting transparency, precision, and innovation for Mühle’s historic shaving brand headquarters.
Nestled in the scenic town of Stützengrün, Germany, the new Mühle Shaving Offices designed by Atelier ST mark a significant architectural and environmental milestone for the third-generation family-run company, Mühle GmbH & Co. KG. Operational since 1945, this state-of-the-art facility extends the historic site in the Ore Mountains with a refined and sustainable industrial office building that blends innovation, efficiency, and elegance.

Site Context and Integration
Replacing Hall 4, the 461 m² structure is strategically located between existing Halls 3 and 5, forming a coherent extension to the production campus. Despite its modest footprint, the new volume subtly rises above its neighbors, asserting a contemporary yet respectful presence in the heterogeneous industrial setting. The architecture reflects a dual ambition: to integrate seamlessly into the existing factory fabric while expressing a strong, independent identity.

Architectural Design and Spatial Layout
At first glance, the building appears minimal and understated. However, its shimmering glass facade reveals a layered architectural narrative that reflects the precision and craftsmanship behind Mühle's shaving products. The hall is composed of two sections: a lofty single-story production space and a compact two-story volume housing offices, administrative zones, and a consultation room. Interior transparency and daylight optimization are achieved through generous glazing, inviting views of the production process and fostering openness.

Material Palette and Façade Strategy
Externally, the building boasts a refined facade of precision-cut aluminum profiles paired with expansive glass panels. This lends the structure a shimmering, almost ethereal quality, especially when animated by natural light. In contrast, the interior reveals a warm wooden core that enhances comfort and acoustic performance. This juxtaposition between cool, sleek exteriors and a tactile, timber-lined interior underscores the brand’s dedication to quality and sustainability.

Sustainable Building Approach
Mühle Shaving Offices exemplify environmentally conscious design. The building structure relies entirely on renewable materials: all supports, beams, ceilings, and roofing are constructed from timber sourced sustainably. A geothermal heat pump ensures low-energy heating, powered by photovoltaic panels integrated into the hall’s green roof. This energy loop, coupled with the use of natural materials, significantly reduces the building’s carbon footprint while aligning with the brand's ethos.

Architectural and Brand Synergy
The architectural language communicates the core values of the Mühle brand—precision, tradition, and refinement. Atelier ST has crafted more than a workplace; this is a space of transparency, technical excellence, and natural beauty, echoing the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship. The project becomes a built manifesto for how architecture can embody identity and act as a strategic asset.
