Embracing Community Living: Erfurt's Andreasgärten Multigenerational Residential Buildings
In the heart of Erfurt, the Johanniter Unfallhilfe has brought to life a visionary project that sets a new standard for community living - "Andreasgärten." This remarkable ensemble of three multigenerational residential buildings is more than just a housing development; it represents a harmonious blend of sustainable urban design, inclusive architecture, and a strong sense of community.
Strategically located next to the historic Zitadelle (Citadel) on Petersberg, Andreasgärten boasts approximately 100 rental apartments of various sizes, catering to families, couples, and individuals from different age groups. The unique planning approach was to create a social space that nurtures communal living and accommodates diverse living arrangements, fostering interactions among residents.
The centrepiece of the development is a serene semi-public garden, adorned with fruit trees, shrubs, and perennials, and surrounded by three slender, three-story wooden buildings. This composition of interconnected exterior and interior spaces creates a dynamic relationship with the surrounding urban landscape, seamlessly integrating into Erfurt's rich history.
The delicate wooden structure not only adds to the visual appeal but also serves a functional purpose. Verandas encompassing each building not only act as a link between private living spaces and the communal courtyard but also provide a communication space between residents across the development. Apartments with two-sided orientations, facing both the inner courtyard and the cityscape, create a harmonious balance between vibrant community life and tranquil private spaces.
Moreover, the project's thoughtful approach extends beyond housing; two nursing communities on the ground floors offer older residents an opportunity to live in a supportive community setting, complemented by social and medical services for all inhabitants.
The facade design is a testament to architectural ingenuity, combining structural logic with a homogenous effect of the framework and wall cladding. Constructed using a hybrid method, the buildings feature reinforced concrete access cores, masonry on the ground floor, and prefabricated cross-laminated timber walls and ceilings on the upper floors.
Notably, the inclusive architectural approach continues with the adaptive reuse of a historic brick carriage house, now housing a kindergarten for 111 children. The wooden extension with an open veranda creates a seamless transition between old and new, maintaining a strong sense of history while embracing a barrier-free and inclusive environment for young learners.
Andreasgärten stands as a true exemplar of urban development that prioritizes community engagement, sustainability, and heritage preservation. As Erfurt's architectural jewel, this multigenerational living concept paves the way for a brighter, more connected future.
