Neutrale Store by Estudio DIIR: Sculptural Minimalism Meets Adaptive Retail Design in Madrid
Minimalist Madrid store by Estudio DIIR features sculptural volumes, adaptive furniture, and neutral tones to enhance a serene retail experience.
Located in the heart of Madrid, Spain, the Neutrale Store by Estudio DIIR transforms a compact 100-square-meter space into a refined and flexible retail environment. Completed in 2022, this architectural intervention is a masterclass in sculptural minimalism, where carefully composed volumes and functional elements define the shopping experience without overshadowing the product.

A Concept-Driven Interior: Where Function Meets Form
The store’s design is structured around three core spatial gestures, each imbued with a strong conceptual identity that elevates the overall experience. Rather than overwhelm the existing space, Estudio DIIR’s intervention celebrates its inherent character by introducing architectural elements that unify, organize, and subtly choreograph movement.
The first gesture is a versatile perimeter installation that runs along the store's façade. Designed to adapt to multiple uses, this boundary element can function as a mirror, shelving unit, bench, or planter, depending on the need. Its multifunctionality blurs the line between architecture and furniture, offering an elegant and cohesive layer that wraps around the interior and connects it to the street.

Defining Space with Sculptural Precision
A second gesture, equally refined, is the longitudinal centerpiece that divides public and private zones. This custom-built structure serves both as a checkout counter and spatial threshold, separating the main retail floor from auxiliary areas including the office, fitting room, bathroom, and storage. This spatial zoning ensures clarity and comfort, enabling both staff and customers to navigate the space intuitively.
At the heart of the store lies the most iconic element: a central sculptural volume that functions as both a display system and a spatial organizer. Elevated by two subtle steps, this central zone introduces a hierarchy of movement that intuitively guides visitors around the store.

An Architectural Journey Anchored by a Monolithic Table
Perpendicular to the sculptural display, a cantilevered 8-meter table cuts across the store’s floor plan. Floating and bold, it introduces a radial circulation path, inviting customers to explore the collection from all angles. This central axis becomes both a functional feature and a design statement, reinforcing the project’s geometric purity and visual clarity.

Material Calmness and Tonal Neutrality
Despite the volumetric strength of the design, the material palette remains subdued and neutral, allowing the products to take center stage. Soft tones, textured finishes, and clean lines come together to create a calming, meditative retail environment, perfectly aligned with the minimalist ethos of the Neutrale brand.

A Unified Vision for Contemporary Retail
Estudio DIIR’s intervention at Neutrale Store is more than just a retail fit-out; it is a vision of how contemporary commercial spaces can be designed as adaptable, sculptural, and experiential environments. By transforming a small footprint into a fluid and layered space, the architects create an environment where architecture and retail strategy work seamlessly together.
