OBLIQUE Bookcase | Modular Shelving Design for Compact Architecture

In contemporary architecture and interior design, space efficiency has become a critical design driver—especially in compact urban environments. The OBLIQUE Bookcase responds to this challenge through a carefully engineered modular shelving design that merges spatial intelligence, structural clarity, and visual lightness. Designed as a 2‑in‑1 shelving system, OBLIQUE is suitable for retail, commercial, and residential settings where flexibility and adaptability are essential.

Designed by Darshana Chawan, the project rethinks the conventional bookcase by introducing an oblique, zig‑zag configuration that allows access from both sides while occupying minimal floor area. The result is a functional object that operates as furniture, spatial divider, and architectural element.

Concept: Rethinking the Bookcase as Architecture

Rather than treating shelving as a static storage unit, OBLIQUE approaches it as a spatial system. The zig‑zag geometry is not merely an aesthetic gesture; it is a deliberate architectural strategy that maximizes visibility, accessibility, and storage efficiency. By angling the shelves at 45 degrees, the design allows users to interact with the unit from multiple directions, making it ideal for high‑traffic interiors such as retail stores, libraries, studios, and compact homes.

This modular shelving design challenges the linear front‑facing typology of traditional bookcases, introducing movement and rhythm into the interior while maintaining structural stability.

Design Features and Functional Innovation

The OBLIQUE Bookcase is composed of three primary components, each engineered for precision, ease of assembly, and durability:

  • Zig‑zag Shelving Modules: Angled shelves improve visibility and access while preventing objects from slipping, supported by integrated stoppers.
  • Vertical Structural Frames: Yellow powder‑coated steel pipes act as the primary load‑bearing elements, ensuring strength with a minimal visual footprint.
  • Tie Members and Inserts: 8 mm pipes function as tie members between vertical frames, locking the system into place and distributing loads efficiently.

Rubber shoes at the base enhance grip and stability across different floor surfaces, making the unit adaptable to varied interior contexts.

Modular Assembly and Flat‑Pack Logic

One of the defining strengths of OBLIQUE is its flat‑pack construction system. The shelving unit can be assembled in three simple steps:

  1. Horizontal tie members are fitted into the vertical pipes using integrated inserts.
  2. Individual shelf pipes slide into precision cut‑outs, ensuring alignment and preventing movement.
  3. Remaining vertical members are secured to complete the structure.

This approach significantly reduces transportation volume, storage space, and on‑site installation effort. The flat‑pack strategy aligns the project with contemporary sustainable design practices by minimizing material waste and logistical impact.

Materiality and Aesthetic Language

OBLIQUE adopts a restrained material palette that emphasizes linearity and contrast. The exposed steel framework, combined with slender shelf elements, creates a lightweight visual presence despite the system’s structural robustness. The rhythmic repetition of lines produces a dynamic façade‑like effect, allowing the bookcase to function as an interior architectural feature rather than mere furniture.

Its minimal yet expressive language allows the modular shelving design to integrate seamlessly into diverse environments—from high‑end retail interiors to compact residential spaces.

Application Across Scales

The versatility of OBLIQUE makes it suitable for multiple spatial scenarios:

  • Retail: Double‑sided access improves product visibility and circulation flow.
  • Commercial Interiors: Acts as a spatial divider without blocking light or sightlines.
  • Residential Spaces: Optimizes storage in small apartments while maintaining openness.

By adapting to different programs and scales, OBLIQUE demonstrates how modular furniture systems can operate as micro‑architectural interventions.

The OBLIQUE Bookcase exemplifies how thoughtful modular shelving design can transcend utility and become an architectural statement. Through its zig‑zag geometry, flat‑pack construction, and refined material expression, the project offers a smart solution for contemporary spatial constraints. Designed by Darshana Chawan, OBLIQUE stands as a compelling example of how furniture design can respond intelligently to modern architectural challenges—where efficiency, adaptability, and elegance must coexist.
