Paintbrush Residence by CLB Architects | Jackson, Wyoming
Paintbrush Residence by CLB Architects is a forest-integrated, light-filled Aspen home featuring modular design, natural materials, treehouse-inspired volumes, and minimalist elegance.
Nestled within a serene Aspen grove just outside Jackson, Wyoming, the Paintbrush Residence by CLB Architects is a masterful example of architecture in harmony with nature. Originally completed in 2003 and thoughtfully evolved over two decades, this 2,400-square-foot home embraces its forested context, blending seamlessly with the landscape while offering a modern reinterpretation of traditional vernacular forms.

Designed as a light-filled, treehouse-inspired retreat, the residence immerses its occupants in nature through expansive glazing, cantilevered projections, and a carefully considered spatial hierarchy. The upper level houses the kitchen, master bedroom, and living room, positioned within the Aspen canopy to create dramatic views and a sense of emergence as one ascends the stairs. A continuous band of clerestory windows brings natural light deep into the interiors, enhancing the connection between indoor spaces and the surrounding forest.

The lower level accommodates guest spaces and entry areas, bathed in sunlight from a two-story window lining the main stairwell. CLB Architects emphasized modular components, slow-weathering materials, and machined detailing to create a home that evolves gently with time. Materials such as oxidized steel, cedar, and white oak cabinetry provide durability, warmth, and tactile richness, while the structural expression remains honest and visible throughout.
In 2023, under the direction of a new owner, the home underwent a sensitive update that respected the original design language while enhancing functionality and comfort. Modular and precision-fabricated elements were introduced, including a reinvented kitchen island, refined cabinetry, and a master bathroom wrapped in warm wood and tile finishes. Every detail—from exposed screw heads to machined cabinet joints—echoes the original architectural intent while embracing new possibilities for modern living.

The Paintbrush Residence stands as a testament to the enduring value of thoughtful, nature-integrated design, offering a home that evolves gracefully with its occupants and surroundings. It exemplifies the harmony of minimalist detailing, material honesty, and sustainable, site-specific architecture.
