Pantone has revealed its Color of the Year for 2023: Viva Magenta. The colour authority's annual choice is a vibrant relative of the red family, announced Thursday.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says the colour was chosen for its work-from-home-friendly vibrancy and ability to blend warm and cool tones.

"Viva Magenta is a hybrid colour that depicts the physical and the virtual," Eiseman said. "It's a colour that reminds us of our connection to others and the world around us."

Pantone hosted the big reveal Thursday night at Art Basel in Miami.

Viva Magenta, an electric magenta hue, has been selected as Pantone's 2023 Color of the Year. This bold colour is sure to set the tone for the year ahead.

Described as "a nuanced crimson tone" that balances warm and cool, Viva Magenta is "an unconventional shade for an unconventional time," Pantone said in a statement unveiling its pick.

"Brave and fearless, (Viva Magenta) is a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes optimism and joy," the statement added. "Powerful and empowering, it is an animated red that encourages experimentation and self-expression without restraint; an electrifying, boundaryless shade."

What is Viva Magenta?

Pantone's Color of The Year, Viva Magenta, embodies strength and vitality. It is a vibrant shade with natural roots, and its energy promotes a positive and optimistic outlook. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless - perfect for writing a new chapter in your story.

This year’s Color of The Year is a new animated red called PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta. This color is powerful and empowering, and it revels in pure joy. It encourages experimentation and self-expression without restraint. It is a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit, and inclusive of all.

"In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to the original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength" - Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute.

How does a 'Color of the Year get chosen?

The Pantone Color Institute is responsible for choosing the "Color of the Year" and they've been doing it since 2000. Twice a year, in May and November, they hold a secret meeting with representatives from different countries' colour standards groups. The meeting takes place in a room with white walls so that everyone can see the objects that their colleagues have brought as inspiration clearly. After two days of debate, they choose a colour for the following year.  The results of the meeting are published in Pantone View, which helps guide the designs and planning of fashion designers, florists, and many other consumer-oriented companies. "The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than just 'what's trending in design. It's a reflection of what's needed in our world today." – Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.

How Pantone became Colour's universal language?

There's no denying that Pantone revolutionized colour communication by inventing a universal colour language. Today, over 10 million designers and manufacturers rely on Pantone to select, communicate, and approve colour in the design.

It all started in 1963 when Lawrence Herbert, Pantone's founder, came up with a way to identify, match and communicate colours that would solve the problems associated with producing accurate colour matches in the graphic arts community. This was a big deal because, for the first time, brand owners and designers could be confident that their printers would understand and be able to reproduce the colours they wanted.

Lawrence Herbert's groundbreaking insight that everyone perceives colours differently led to the creation of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®, a book of standardized colours in a fan format. Since then, Pantone has expanded its colour-matching system to other colour-critical industries, including digital technology, textiles, plastics, architecture and contract interiors, and paint.
