Pasta La Vista Bistro, designed by NAAW, marks the third location of the brand’s expanding Italian restaurant chain in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Completed in 2024 and spanning 120 m², the project reinterprets the bold, geometric language of 1980s Memphis design through a modern, localized lens. The interior merges expressive color, clean geometry, and custom craftsmanship to create a dining atmosphere that feels both energetic and refined.

A Modern Revival of Memphis Design

The conceptual foundation draws from the Memphis movement that originated in Milan, known for its graphic shapes, unexpected color combinations, and expressive character. NAAW adapts this aesthetic into a contemporary dining setting by blending the brand’s visual identity with local materials, bespoke craftsmanship, and current hospitality design sensibilities. Scarlet and olive tones—core to the restaurant’s palette—define the space and reinforce brand recognition, giving the interior a strong and memorable visual signature.

Geometry as a Symbol of Italian Culinary Diversity

Geometric motifs appear throughout the interior in custom furniture, built-in joinery, and patterned wall treatments. Two primary shapes dominate the design narrative: the elongated rectangle and the wave. Together, they act as visual metaphors for the range of Italian cuisine, expressing both structure and fluidity. This interplay of form and rhythm supports a cohesive storytelling experience, guiding guests through a metaphorical “culinary journey.”

Zoned Spatial Planning with a Sense of Openness

The layout is carefully choreographed to maintain clear circulation while preserving the openness essential to a welcoming bistro environment. The entrance functions as a bold portal marked by contrasting shades of red—scarlet and burgundy—that evoke warmth, passion, and the vibrancy of Italian gastronomy. A full-height mirror opposite the entry expands the space and introduces visual depth, while the waiting area and wardrobe are seamlessly incorporated without interrupting the spatial rhythm.

Craftsmanship and Custom Design as Core Elements

The main dining hall shifts to a softer, light-toned palette paired with vivid accent furniture. All key furniture pieces were designed in-house by NAAW and crafted by local artisans, reflecting the studio’s ongoing commitment to supporting regional production. This approach ensures material authenticity and offers a tactile, handcrafted character that elevates the dining experience.

To enhance ambiance, accent lighting from Danish brands HAY and &Tradition introduces a contemporary European design flair, balancing the interior’s expressive palette with warmth and subtle elegance.

Art, Atmosphere, and Emotional Layers

A central artwork titled “Silence” by artist Roman Zakharov adds an introspective counterbalance to the bistro’s energetic visual identity. The piece, influenced by the aesthetics of Stanley Donwood and the atmospheric qualities of Radiohead’s music, injects a moment of quiet contemplation within the vibrant environment.

NAAW’s meticulous design process required exceptional precision—from early concept development to on-site supervision—to achieve harmony in color, contrast, form, and meaning.
