Brighton College in Brighton and Hove, United Kingdom, has unveiled its stunning new Performing Arts Centre, designed by the acclaimed architectural studio Krft. Completed in 2024 under the direction of lead architect Thomas Dieben, this 3,880 m² facility introduces a vibrant, multifunctional cultural hub into the historic neogothic campus.

Innovative Design for a Compact Site

The challenge was clear: how to accommodate a large, 400-seat theatre and a variety of performance and learning spaces on a compact site nestled between the heritage-listed Main Building, designed by Gilbert Scott, and the newly constructed School for Sports and Science. By carefully setting the centre apart from these monumental structures, Krft created intimate outdoor areas while maintaining functional interior flow.

The architects solved the spatial constraints through inventive layering: some rooms extend beyond the site footprint, while the theatre hall is elevated, freeing up the ground floor for vibrant social spaces. This configuration results in a dynamic, sculptural form reminiscent of a ballerina in motion. The unified material palette of curved brick and flint elegantly bridges the gap between the historical campus and the contemporary architecture, creating a dialogue between past and present.

Multifunctional Spaces for Learning and Performance

The Performing Arts Centre features a thoughtful arrangement of studio spaces, classrooms, social areas, and a multifunctional theatre hall. Underground studios, the raised theatre hall, and the ground-floor communal areas are connected via a three-dimensional public interior, complete with wide, daylight-filled staircases that encourage circulation and engagement.

The theatre itself is a compact, highly detailed wooden playbox, featuring a daylight oculus that makes it equally suitable for daily practice sessions and full-scale performances. The careful design ensures that every corner of the building serves both educational and artistic functions, supporting Brighton College’s thriving performing arts program.

A Harmonious Blend of History and Modernity

Krft’s design balances heritage and innovation, integrating the new centre into the historic neogothic fabric while providing a contemporary cultural landmark. The material choice, sculptural form, and spatial creativity make the Performing Arts Centre not only a functional facility but also a visual statement within Brighton College’s campus.
