Perspective : ways of seeing
“My destination is no longer a place, rather a new way of seeing.” Marcel Proust
The purpose of this proposal is to build a new way of looking at the world, not the beauty or aesthetic value of sculpture in public space. The architectural sculpture for this proposal is called perspective. There are three new ways of seeing to provide through ‘Perspective’. These three seek to expand the experience on the premise of people’s movement.
First, ‘Perspective’ reveals time through light and shadow. The huge 16m x 21m plane creates a sundial-like shadow through a diagonal column. This shadow varies in shape depending on the location of the sun. The shadow created by the folds at the bottom is also aimed at revealing time.
Second, pedestal of ‘Perspective’ provides a new way to see the sculpture through movement and programming, not through the base of the object. The landscaped pedestal is the background for daily movement and civic events. It provides public space for pedestrians approaching by crosswalks. The road that crosses down the ‘Perspective’ is the background of local events and the daily movement. It also offers a new way of appreciating the sculpture through level planning up and down.
Third, It provides a new method of viewing the local area through the vertical movement of ‘Perspective’. The roof of the structure, which can be seen from the surrounding Prospect Park and the New York skyline in the distance, brings out the potential of the visual spectacle of the place through the level.
Architectural sculpture is not an object appreciated from a distance, but a catalyst for expanding daily experiences closely. The diagonal column functions as the pivot of ‘Perspective’ along with its structural function. The mound structural supporting ‘Perspective’ was intended to hide the structure so that the sculpture appeared to lean against the diagonal column. In the lower part of ‘Perspective’, it reveals that it is an architectural sculpture by revealing tectonic. not a sculptural object.‘Perspective’ leads to a roundabout connecting parks, sports facilities, and neighborhoods. The ground level is separated from the surroundings and reconnects through the experience of going down and up.
‘Perspective’ is a combination of curved surfaces and planes. It has a steel frame structure. The elevation reinterprets the hard materialities of concrete to create a fabric-like effect of GFRC. Molding using digital fabrication is manufactured, and a module of the facade is manufactured by GFRC.
The vertical circulation of ‘Perspective’ consists of a direct staircase leading to the rooftop and an elevator leading to the lower floor of the rooftop. Through these, you can go to the observatory located on the rooftop.
