How the "Reflection" Cinema Center Embraces Tradition, Climate, and Community in the Heart of Sharjah
The architectural project titled Reflection, created by Марина Носкова, Winner entry of Cinema Box, is a comprehensive and culturally reflective cinema center designed for the Al Rika suburb in the Sharjah district of the United Arab Emirates. This design integrates modern cinema functionality with deep respect for the local climate, traditions, and social customs, resulting in a building that serves not only as an entertainment hub but also as a cultural landmark.

Contextual Analysis
The cinema center is strategically positioned along a major highway connecting Sharjah Airport with popular coastal areas frequented by tourists. This locational advantage allows the center to capture significant attention from both residents and visitors. The project addresses the lack of nearby cinema centers in this residential suburb, enhancing the area's cultural offerings while strengthening neighborhood relations.

Design Overview
The center includes a variety of cinema spaces catering to different group sizes and preferences. This includes:
A large IMAX cinema hall for 450 people.
18 smaller cinema halls accommodating 100 people each.
4 VIP cinema halls for 12 people each. An open-air cinema.
Numerous recreational and social spaces such as outdoor leisure areas, board game zones, children's playrooms, food courts, and exhibition areas.
In line with the cultural and social needs of the area, the design aims to create spaces where people can gather, socialize, and engage in multiple activities beyond watching movies, fostering a strong sense of community.

Climate Considerations
The UAE is known for its extreme heat and arid conditions, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in summer, often reaching up to 50°C. Sandstorms are also common, and rainfall is sporadic, concentrated between November and May. Given this harsh climate, the Reflection project incorporates several design strategies to mitigate the intense heat, sand, and dust.
Thermal Protection: The building’s walls are made of massive monolithic reinforced concrete, which provides excellent thermal protection and stability, reducing the impact of external temperature fluctuations. This material is specifically chosen to withstand the harsh climatic conditions, including hot winds and extreme solar exposure..
Minimizing Solar Heat Gain: Window size and placement are carefully calibrated to meet daylighting needs without allowing excessive heat penetration. Sun-shading devices, including mashrabiya patterns, are employed on windows and facades to minimize heat gain while maintaining ventilation. Mashrabiya, a traditional element in Arabic architecture, serves as both an aesthetic and functional feature, allowing air to circulate freely while protecting interiors from the intense sunlight.
Natural Ventilation: The design introduces open floors where wind can pass freely, cooling the building naturally. This concept of "ventilated floors" helps prevent overheating, especially during the peak summer months, ensuring that visitors remain comfortable even in outdoor recreational areas.
Canopy Structure: The entire building is covered by an expansive canopy, designed with traditional Arabic patterns. This structure not only provides shade but also helps cool the space beneath it by allowing air to circulate freely. The canopy creates intricate light and shadow patterns, adding a dynamic visual appeal to the building's facade.

Cultural Integration
A key focus of the Reflection project is its alignment with local traditions and aesthetics. The mashrabiya elements used throughout the building echo the region's architectural heritage, blending seamlessly with modern design elements. The careful use of proportions and geometric patterns highlights the importance of visual appeal in traditional Arabic design, where shade, light, and airflow are integral aspects of the architecture.
Moreover, the building’s versatility is another nod to the area's cultural and social needs. It is designed to be more than just a cinema complex. It is a multifunctional space where people can socialize, relax, enjoy outdoor activities, and participate in community events. The building provides for cultural exhibitions, food areas, and recreational zones that cater to all age groups, thus promoting social interaction and strengthening neighborhood ties.

Sustainability and Adaptability
In response to both environmental and cultural factors, the project also emphasizes sustainability. The minimal use of glass reduces the building's environmental footprint by preventing unnecessary heat gain, thus lowering cooling energy demands. Moreover, the building's structural design, featuring cantilevered floors and ventilated spaces, allows for efficient natural cooling, significantly reducing the need for mechanical air conditioning in a region where energy consumption is high due to extreme temperatures.
Additionally, the flat roofs provide an opportunity for partial landscaping, further contributing to the building’s cooling strategy while offering outdoor spaces that connect visitors to nature. The layout of the building ensures that it blends into the local environment while standing out as a contemporary reflection of the region’s architectural identity.
