Rehabilitation and Extension of the Belfry of Dives-sur-Mer Cultural Center by ACAU Architectes
Historic belfry transformed into a cultural center with a modern brick extension for music, puppetry, and sustainable community engagement.
A sensitive fusion of heritage preservation and contemporary cultural architecture in Normandy, France
Located in Dives-sur-Mer, a coastal town rich in industrial history, the Belfry stands as a monumental reminder of 19th-century metallurgical architecture. Originally built in 1892 and registered as a Monument Historique since 2007, the Belfry's transformation into a dynamic cultural center by ACAU Architectes represents a delicate balancing act between heritage restoration and modern architectural intervention.

Honoring Industrial Heritage Through Architectural Restoration
The project’s core objective was to expand the building’s capacity without compromising the unique historical character of the Belfry. Serving today as an intercommunal music school, the original structure underwent a meticulous restoration process, driven by architectural and historical research aimed at preserving the building's authenticity.
Key conservation efforts included:
- Restoring brick facades and aged plasterwork
- Reworking the flint joints using traditional “fork” techniques
- Rehabilitating original whitewash finishes
- Preserving and repairing the tower’s historic clocks
An adjacent single-story structure, originally leaning against the Belfry, was deconstructed and rebuilt. Every element—from iron railings to decorative friezes—was carefully reimagined to maintain architectural continuity. Only one bold intervention, a large modern opening facing the new south square, signals the building’s contemporary function and welcomes the public into its updated space.

A Contemporary Brick Extension for Puppetry Arts
To accommodate a national puppetry theater and creative workshop, ACAU introduced a new brick extension characterized by geometric clarity and architectural humility. Set into the site's available footprint, the monolithic addition wraps around the site’s perimeter with crisp, modern lines and subtle sculptural detailing.
A northern indentation discreetly marks the artists' entrance, while a porous brick lattice animates the façade and reveals internal activity during evening performances—establishing a poetic connection between art and architecture.
Though assertively modern, the new volume never competes with the Belfry’s ornate materiality. Instead, its smooth, uniform brick surface serves as a respectful backdrop, amplifying the expressive textures of the historic tower.
A fourth façade—inserted between the old and new structures—uses anodized metal cladding to dematerialize its presence, offering a symbolic and literal reflection of the site's temporal layers.

Seamless Circulation Between Past and Present
A glazed corridor delicately connects the historic and contemporary buildings, guiding visitors through a spatial journey from architectural heritage to forward-looking creativity. Inside, the design prioritizes openness and visibility, particularly in the puppet-making workshop, which opens generously toward the east—encouraging children and adults to observe the artistic process.
The auditorium, which seats 130 guests, is strategically embedded into the sloping site. This subtle encasement allows for enhanced vertical space within the theater while preserving views of the Belfry from the street—anchoring the extension within the surrounding urban fabric.

Sustainable Design and Ecological Sensibility
True to ACAU Architectes’ vision, the project integrates High Environmental Quality (HQE) principles throughout. All interior elements—such as partitions, joinery, and built-in furniture—employ bio-based wooden materials, contributing to an ecologically conscious atmosphere that is both tactile and warm.
This holistic approach merges architectural heritage, cultural functionality, and environmental responsibility, crafting a civic space that not only revitalizes a local icon but also strengthens Dives-sur-Mer’s identity as a place of memory and creativity.
