Revitalizing Urban Spaces: The Loft - Collateral of Terraces by Abin Design Studio

In a thoughtful tribute to his childhood and the legacy of his father, an architect embarks on a remarkable housing project that seamlessly blends the past and the present. The Loft - Collateral of Terraces, designed by Abin Design Studio, is a testament to the enduring significance of heritage and the transformative power of architectural innovation.

At the core of this project lies a 35-year-old home, a G+1 parental dwelling that holds cherished memories and emotional ties. The architect, driven by a desire to honour the legacy of his father while infusing his own creative vision, sets out to expand and enhance the existing structure, preserving its physical and emotional history.

The architectural intervention takes the form of a retrofitting process, focusing on the loft space atop the retained building. Here, the architects seize a unique opportunity offered by the site – the creation of multiple terraces. This concept becomes the foundation for a triple-layered terraced abode, encompassing living facilities, toilets, and a study. Each space boasts its own terrace, establishing a harmonious connection between indoor and outdoor realms.

The design approach seamlessly blends the old and the new, incorporating elements that pay homage to the past while embracing a vibrant contemporary aesthetic. The existing structure is repainted in a neutral beige tone, serving as a backdrop for the new construction, which exudes colour and artistic expression. The structural framework, rendered in primary shades, acts as a visual complement to antique pieces and period furniture collected by the architect over the years.

To achieve a timeless design, the architects skillfully combine ceramic tiles, steel, and wood. The result is captivating mosaic flooring, crafted by recycling leftover tiles from various projects, which unifies the house and adds a touch of elegance.

One of the standout features of this remarkable housing project is the front terrace. Here, an enchanting display of antique artefacts captivates the senses, from intricately designed ceramic and brass vases to solid wood columns. Each piece tells a story, evoking a sense of stepping into a miniature museum. To integrate this captivating interior with the surrounding context, potted plants of varying heights are strategically placed, creating a natural camouflage.
