RMG Apartment by André Becker – A Contemporary Renovation Balancing Light, Space, and Design Identity
The RMG Apartment by André Becker transforms a longtime residence with subtle interventions, enhancing natural light, spatial flow, and personalized interiors.
The RMG Apartment, designed by architect André Becker and photographed by Maira Acayaba, represents a thoughtful renovation of a long-inhabited residence in Brazil. With a total area of 110 m² and completed in 2021, the project focused on reimagining an existing apartment through subtle yet transformative interventions that enhanced light, circulation, and atmosphere.

Rethinking the Apartment Interior
The client, who had lived in the apartment for several years, initially sought only new furniture. However, upon analyzing the layout, the design team identified deeper architectural opportunities.
The dining room, located at the heart of the apartment, was noticeably dark with limited natural light. A wide structural pillar between the living and dining spaces restricted daylight penetration. Instead of concealing it, Becker chose to expose the pillar and open the adjoining wall as much as possible—turning a limitation into a spatial highlight.

Introducing Light and Spatial Fluidity
A small but strategic civil intervention changed the character of the entire home. The original 90 cm gap between the pillar and the suite wall allowed minimal light into the apartment’s center. To resolve this, the bathroom on the opposite side of the corridor was reconfigured, introducing a curved wall that framed the new opening.
This gesture created a soft architectural feature while allowing natural light to flow deeper into the apartment. To emphasize its presence, the curved wall was clad with a custom hydraulic tile panel designed by Fabio Flaks, introducing artistry and material expression into the heart of the home.

Personal Collections and Customized Furniture
Beyond the architectural interventions, the client’s personal collection of books, engravings, and artworks played an essential role in shaping the design language. This provided a strong foundation for curating bespoke furniture and shelving systems by renowned brands such as Estúdio Bola, Fernando Jaeger, Lumini, Mood, Ovo, Progetto, REKA, Sardep, Uma, and Kian.
The resulting interiors achieve a balance between modern minimalism and personal warmth, showcasing a home that feels both curated and lived-in.

A Subtle Transformation with Lasting Impact
The RMG Apartment renovation demonstrates how minor architectural adjustments can create a profound transformation. By exposing structural elements, enhancing daylight, and introducing custom-crafted details, André Becker crafted an apartment that celebrates spatial openness, material richness, and personal identity.
This project stands as a testament to Brazilian contemporary residential architecture, where thoughtful design meets everyday life.
