Robert Koch High School Extension: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Modernity by SSP Rüthnick Architekten

SSP Rüthnick Architekten designed the striking extension of Robert Koch High School, blending contemporary architecture with the historical charm of its existing structure, which is under ensemble protection. This expansion, situated in Berlin, Germany, accommodates 580 pupils and meets the evolving educational needs of the school while respecting its architectural heritage.

The project revolves around modernizing and rehabilitating the original school building, dating back to 1875 and designed by Hermann Blankenstein. The märkische brick Gothic style of the existing structure was carefully preserved, while the new extension introduces a fresh, modern language that enhances functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Design Concept and Materials

The extension features a three-story building designed with a vertical larch wood slat façade, creating a sharp contrast to the red clinker brick masonry of the historic building. This modern façade, coupled with movable sliding elements, allows for dynamic sun protection and adds plasticity to the design. The larch wood was chosen for its durability and its ability to complement the warmth of the brick, forming a harmonious connection between old and new.

The slender, conical columns elevate the extension, giving the structure a floating effect and preserving access to the historic building. This approach minimizes disruption to the existing schoolyard, allowing for seamless integration of the new building within the urban context. The light yellow color scheme and artistic details, such as twisted balusters, subtly reference the old structure, ensuring visual continuity while adding modern flair.

Innovative Interior and Educational Spaces

Inside, the spaces reflect a commitment to forward-thinking school pedagogy and functionality. The design integrates bright corridors with green accent walls, offering a lively and stimulating environment. Linoleum floors in darker tones contrast with the lighter walls, creating a sense of warmth and modernity. Colorful furniture scattered throughout the wide corridors encourages collaborative learning and interaction, expanding the usable space beyond traditional classrooms.

Four bridges connect the new extension to the existing building, facilitating smooth circulation and interaction. These bridges are carefully integrated into the architecture, appearing as sculptural elements that enhance the overall aesthetic. In addition to the new elevator, which ensures barrier-free access, the bridges provide seamless connection to specialized rooms, such as the library, and link the mezzanine floors across the buildings.

Preserving Heritage and Modernizing Facilities

The project involved extensive renovations to improve functionality while respecting the preservation guidelines. The science rooms were refurbished, and roof areas were renovated in accordance with preservation orders. In addition, technical installations were updated, and fire protection systems were enhanced to meet modern safety standards. The floor plans were optimized to provide better access and usability across both the historic and new buildings.
