RSC (Resort Software Community) Building by THAD SUP Atelier
The RSC Building by THAD SUP Atelier blends sustainable design, Eastern aesthetics, and modern functionality in Hainan's subtropical climate.
The RSC (Resort Software Community) Building, designed by THAD SUP Atelier, is a striking architectural landmark in Chengmai County, Hainan Province, China. Completed in 2021, this 10,980 m² structure serves as a hub for exhibitions, creative industries, and commercial offices. Combining modern design with sustainable features, it is a showcase of innovative architectural practices tailored to subtropical climates.
Design Concept: Garden & Courtyard
The building’s design draws inspiration from traditional Eastern gardens and courtyards. These timeless elements are reimagined into a multi-functional urban space that incorporates:
- Terraced Fields: Strategically placed to integrate the landscape with the structure.
- Interconnected Courtyards: These provide visual and physical connections across different levels.
- Outdoor Atriums and Cooling Alleys: Designed to enhance airflow and reduce heat, these features optimize the building for its subtropical environment.

Dynamic Public Spaces
Visitors and users of the RSC Building can explore a variety of changing viewpoints through winding pathways, making the experience both functional and visually engaging. The design promotes interaction with the environment while fostering creativity and collaboration.

Location: A Landmark in Tencent Eco Village Park
The building is located in the southwest corner of the Tencent Eco Village Park in the Hainan Eco-Smart New City. Its strategic placement near the park’s main entrance makes it a key feature of the development.
Integration with Surroundings
The structure’s design incorporates:
- Courtyards and Platforms: These create seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Southwestern Views: Each floor offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Architectural Layout
The RSC Building’s layout is meticulously planned to combine functionality and aesthetics. Each area serves a specific purpose while contributing to the overall sustainability of the structure.
Ground Floor: Multi-Functional Spaces
The first floor houses key public facilities:
- Exhibition Areas: Flexible spaces for showcasing innovations.
- Multi-Function Hall: Suitable for events and gatherings.
- Café and Tearoom: Offering a relaxing environment for visitors.
- Landscaped Terrace: A green space that enhances the connection between the indoors and outdoors.
Upper Floors: Office Spaces
The second to fourth floors are dedicated to office spaces, designed for both functionality and comfort:
- Core Design: Central areas contain elevators, staircases, and essential utilities.
- Outdoor Access: Every floor has direct connections to outdoor platforms, promoting natural ventilation and lighting.

Rooftop and Vertical Connectivity
Each floor features a roof platform, connected by outdoor stairs. These platforms lead to landscaped terraces and encourage interaction among occupants. A vertical evacuation staircase in the eastern hall ensures safety in emergencies.
Sustainable Features
Sustainability is a cornerstone of the RSC Building’s design. The architects implemented features to minimize environmental impact:
- Earth-Covered Floors: The first and second floors are covered with soil to reduce energy consumption by improving insulation.
- Ventilation and Daylighting: Carefully planned systems maximize natural airflow and light, reducing reliance on artificial solutions.

A Vision for Modern Architecture
The RSC (Resort Software Community) Building is more than just an architectural project; it’s a vision for sustainable and functional urban spaces. By integrating traditional design elements with modern technology, THAD SUP Atelier has created a landmark that reflects the cultural and environmental priorities of the region.
