Sawasae Bunisari House by BASIO: A Tropical Villa Design Rooted in Landscape and Simplicity
Compact tropical villa in Bandung featuring V-shaped layout, glass walls, natural materials, and seamless indoor-outdoor living integrated with landscape.
Sawasae Bunisari House, designed by BASIO, is a contemporary tropical villa located in Cijambe, Bandung, Indonesia. Completed in 2022, this 70-square-meter residential project redefines compact living by blending architecture seamlessly with nature. Built on family-owned land, the house serves as a peaceful vacation retreat, embracing the surrounding rice fields and lush greenery.

Contextual Architecture in Bandung’s Natural Landscape
Set on an uneven, contoured site, the design of Sawasae Bunisari House responds directly to its topography. Instead of leveling the land, BASIO chose to adapt the structure to the natural terrain, preserving the authenticity of the landscape. This approach reflects a sustainable architectural strategy, minimizing site intervention while enhancing environmental integration.
The villa’s positioning captures expansive views of the surrounding rice fields, creating a strong visual and spatial connection between indoor and outdoor environments. This contextual sensitivity is a key feature of modern tropical architecture in Indonesia.

V-Shaped Layout Enhancing Views and Ventilation
One of the defining features of Sawasae Bunisari House is its unique V-shaped configuration. The building is divided into two distinct volumes, strategically arranged to maximize panoramic views and natural airflow.

Full-height glass walls open the interiors to the surrounding scenery, allowing abundant natural light to flood the spaces. This design not only reduces reliance on artificial lighting but also enhances the sense of openness and tranquility. The V-shaped layout also creates a central outdoor courtyard, acting as a communal gathering space for relaxation and social interaction.

Indoor-Outdoor Living Concept
The project strongly emphasizes indoor-outdoor continuity, a hallmark of tropical residential design. The open courtyard between the two building volumes serves as a shared social space, complete with a communal table for dining and gathering.
This transitional space blurs the boundaries between architecture and landscape, encouraging users to engage with nature. The seamless flow between interior and exterior spaces enhances the overall living experience, making it ideal for a vacation home setting.

Material Palette: Concrete, Wood, and Glass
Sawasae Bunisari House features a carefully curated material palette that balances durability with warmth. Concrete provides structural stability and a modern aesthetic, while wood introduces a natural, tactile quality that softens the interiors.
The extensive use of glass not only maximizes views but also strengthens the connection to the surrounding environment. These materials work together to create a harmonious architectural language that is both contemporary and contextually appropriate.

Functional Interior Design for Compact Living
Despite its modest size, the house is thoughtfully designed to accommodate essential living functions. The interior includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom, all arranged efficiently to optimize space utilization.
Minimalist design principles are evident throughout the interiors, ensuring a clean and uncluttered environment. The combination of natural materials and open layouts enhances comfort while maintaining a strong visual connection to the outdoors.

Sustainable and Climate-Responsive Design
The design of Sawasae Bunisari House incorporates passive strategies suited to the tropical climate. Natural ventilation, daylight optimization, and orientation play crucial roles in maintaining thermal comfort.
By leveraging its V-shaped form and open layout, the house allows cross-ventilation, reducing the need for mechanical cooling. The integration with the natural landscape further contributes to a sustainable and eco-conscious design approach.

A Minimalist Tropical Retreat
Sawasae Bunisari House by BASIO exemplifies how small-scale residential architecture can achieve a strong connection with nature through thoughtful design. Its adaptive response to the site, efficient spatial planning, and use of natural materials make it a compelling example of contemporary tropical architecture in Indonesia.
The project demonstrates that simplicity, when combined with contextual awareness, can result in a highly functional and aesthetically refined living environment.
