School Under a Neem by Dhulia Architecture Design Studio
A community-focused school extension in Shapar celebrates traditional learning under a neem tree through playful architecture, flexible classrooms, and nature-connected design.
Located in the industrial village of Shapar, India, School Under a Neem by Dhulia Architecture Design Studio represents a thoughtful response to educational and social challenges faced by working-class communities. Designed as an extension to the Dr. Dhaval Rajnikant Mehta Primary School, the project draws inspiration from the historic Indian tradition of learning beneath a tree. For centuries, knowledge in rural India has often been shared under the shade of large trees at the heart of villages. This project translates that cultural memory into a contemporary architectural language while addressing urgent spatial needs for a growing student population.


Shapar is primarily an industrial settlement where many families depend on daily wage factory jobs. Because of irregular working schedules and financial pressures, children often drop out of school to care for younger siblings or assist with household responsibilities. Despite these challenges, the primary school has become an important social anchor in the community, largely due to its quality education and free midday meal program. These initiatives have encouraged parents to prioritize schooling, leading to enrollment numbers that exceed the capacity of the existing infrastructure.
To address this issue, the architects designed a 340-square-meter extension block that integrates seamlessly into the existing campus while preserving the central role of a mature neem tree. The neem tree, a symbol of resilience and wisdom in Indian culture, became the conceptual and spatial centerpiece of the project. Rather than building around it or removing it, the design embraces the tree as a focal point, reinforcing the idea of learning under nature’s shelter.


The site layout features the original school building positioned toward one edge of the campus, with a series of informal structures lining the eastern side. Between these elements lies an open foreground space that functions as a communal stage for daily school life. Students gather here for assemblies, midday meals, sports activities, and cultural events. The architects recognized the importance of maintaining this open space and positioned the new extension block carefully so that it strengthens the spatial relationship between the buildings and the neem tree.
The architectural design follows a simple and efficient layout, responding to tight budget constraints and the need for future flexibility. The building is organized across two levels with three classrooms on the upper floor and provisions for additional classrooms below. The ground floor remains intentionally open, allowing it to function as a prayer hall or multipurpose gathering space. In the future, lightweight partitions can easily be added to convert the open hall into three additional classrooms, ensuring that the building can adapt to evolving educational needs.
Natural light and ventilation play a crucial role in shaping the building’s interior environment. Carefully positioned openings create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day while framing views of the surrounding campus landscape. These windows and apertures establish a visual dialogue between students and the trees outside, reinforcing a strong connection to nature.
The façade design reflects a playful and child-friendly architectural expression. The building features earthy tones that blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings. White wall surfaces stand out against subtle grey frames, while vibrant primary colors highlight the window jambs and door elements. These colors create visual energy across the façade, transforming the school building into a lively environment that stimulates curiosity and creativity.
One of the most distinctive architectural features is a small circular opening located at the end of the upper corridor. This opening frames the neem tree like a living portrait, symbolically reinforcing the project’s core concept. A bright yellow outline accentuates the circular frame, drawing attention to the tree and reminding students of the timeless connection between knowledge and nature.


The building’s doors and windows also incorporate interactive design elements tailored for children. Each classroom door includes a small integrated blackboard where students can draw, write their names, or personalize their classroom identity. This feature transforms everyday architectural components into tools for expression and engagement.
Similarly, the windows include rotating yellow rectangular panels that allow children to interact playfully with the architecture. These simple yet imaginative details encourage exploration and creativity while fostering a sense of ownership among students.

Transparency is another key design strategy. Glass panels in doors and windows ensure that classrooms remain naturally illuminated throughout the day. This approach reduces reliance on artificial lighting while creating bright and welcoming learning environments. The contrast between the earthy corridor walls and these vibrant architectural details enhances spatial experience and visual interest.

Ultimately, School Under a Neem demonstrates how architecture can respond sensitively to social context, cultural traditions, and economic limitations. Through minimal interventions and thoughtful design strategies, Dhulia Architecture Design Studio has created a flexible educational environment that celebrates community, nature, and learning. The project stands as a meaningful example of how small-scale architecture can generate significant social impact in underserved communities.

By embracing the symbolic presence of the neem tree and translating traditional learning practices into contemporary architecture, the school becomes more than just an extension building: it becomes a spatial narrative of heritage, resilience, and hope for future generations.
