Sharjah Mosque by MJU Engineering Consultancy: A Modern Interpretation of Islamic Architecture
Sharjah Mosque by MJU Engineering blends contemporary Islamic architecture with traditional motifs, featuring mashrabiya façades, sustainable design, and a serene prayer hall.
The Sharjah Mosque, designed by MJU Engineering Consultancy for the Sharjah Driving Institute, is a remarkable example of contemporary Islamic architecture that seamlessly integrates traditional design principles with modern functionality. This architectural project embodies the perfect balance between cultural heritage and innovative design, offering a spiritual and communal space that is both visually captivating and highly functional.

Architectural Concept and Inspiration
Drawing inspiration from the rich history of Islamic architecture, the mosque features intricate geometric patterns, interlocking motifs, and refined ornamental details that reflect the principles of unity and harmony. The façade showcases elaborate mashrabiya screens, which not only filter sunlight but also create dynamic patterns of light and shadow across the interior, enhancing the spiritual ambiance while improving energy efficiency.
The mosque’s central prayer hall is designed to accommodate large congregations comfortably, promoting a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Its spatial layout encourages community engagement, allowing the mosque to function as a multifunctional hub that serves both spiritual and social needs.

Materials and Construction
Sustainability and durability are central to the construction strategy of the Sharjah Mosque. Reinforced concrete provides structural stability and enables expansive, open interior spaces, while precast concrete panels and glass elements define the façade with a modern aesthetic. The use of local stone strengthens the mosque’s connection to regional craftsmanship and the surrounding landscape, celebrating local building traditions.
Advanced technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM) were employed to ensure precision in planning and construction, keeping the project within budget and on schedule.

Design Highlights
The dome, a hallmark of mosque architecture, is reinterpreted with a minimalist approach, maintaining grandeur without overpowering the overall design. The interplay between solid and void elements throughout the mosque creates visual interest, while natural light permeates the interiors to elevate the worship experience. The geometric precision and ornamental details of the façade reflect Islamic philosophical values, reinforcing a sense of unity and spiritual harmony.

The Sharjah Mosque is a contemporary architectural masterpiece that bridges tradition and modernity, offering a sustainable, functional, and visually striking environment for worshippers and the wider community.
