Nestled on the western edge of Nara Park, Shisui, a Luxury Collection Hotel, offers an unparalleled experience where Japanese tradition intertwines seamlessly with modern design. Nara, widely celebrated as the birthplace of Japanese culture, is home to UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Todaiji Temple, Kasuga Shrine, and Kofukuji Temple, making it a destination of cultural significance and natural beauty.

Despite its global appeal, Nara has historically lacked high-end accommodations that allow visitors to relax, immerse in nature, and experience the region’s rich heritage. Shisui was conceived as part of the Yoshikien Garden Area Preservation and Utilization Project, a public-private partnership led by the prefectural government through a proposal-based bidding process, creating a hospitality destination that honors Nara’s past while embracing contemporary comforts.

A Celebration of Nara’s History and Architecture

Spanning 3 hectares, the site preserves historical land allotments dating back to the Edo period (1603–1867). Central to the project is the renovation of the former Governor's Office building, completed in 1922, now housing a reception area and restaurant. This building retains the Room of Certification, where the Showa Emperor ratified the San Francisco Peace Treaty, ensuring historical integrity.

Additionally, the former Seson-in Temple building, a rare remnant of a Kofukuji sub-temple, has been converted into a visitor café. Alongside the Yoshikien Garden and its tea arbor with a traditional thatched roof, these heritage structures provide a direct link to Nara’s architectural and cultural legacy. The Yoshiki Garden Main Building, completed in 1919, is recognized as a cultural property of Nara Prefecture.

All historic structures have been seismically retrofitted and thoughtfully renovated, blending heritage preservation with modern functionality.

The accommodations building features a calm-tiled roof and walls with partially exposed thick columns, inspired by traditional Nara-style architecture. Meanwhile, the spa building reinterprets the former Youth Hall, blending Japanese and Western elements to create a serene wellness retreat.
