SOKEC Community Cultural Center by caraa.cz: Revitalizing Heritage and Community Life in Hrušovany u Brna
SOKEC Community Cultural Center revitalizes a historic Sokol site into a vibrant, multi-purpose hub for culture, sports, and community life.
The SOKEC Community Cultural Center, designed by caraa.cz, stands as a remarkable example of cultural regeneration and architectural revitalization in Hrušovany u Brna, Czechia. Completed in 2022 across a 2000 m² site, the project transforms the grounds of an outdated Sokol building, breathing new life into the heart of the village while honoring its historical roots.

Reimagining the Village Core: A New Community Landmark
Hrušovany u Brna lacks a traditional public square; instead, the SOKEC area has long served as its informal civic heart. The architectural team—Štěpán Kubíček, Martina Buřičová, Jan Novotný, and Jonáš Krýzl—embraced this local context, preserving the genius loci and enhancing it to support diverse social, cultural, and sports events. The design introduces a newly defined forecourt on Masarykova Street, seamlessly integrating it into the overall complex and reaffirming the site’s pivotal role in the village’s communal life.

A Transparent, Multi-Purpose Cultural Hub
At the center of the complex is the striking Sokec building, designed to be compact, transparent, and easy to navigate. Its architecture expresses clarity and openness, with a multi-purpose hall as its core. Inside, the space unfolds into three interconnected zones:
- The multi-purpose hall for large-scale events and municipal gatherings
- A welcoming restaurant space for community dining and social interaction
- A garden with a sports area, extending the building’s activity zones into the outdoors
These elements can be flexibly merged to create a unified space for major events, showcasing the building’s adaptability and user-centered design.

Supporting Community Life: From Music to Sports
The center goes beyond large event spaces, offering two smaller halls on the first floor overlooking the garden—perfect for local associations, athletes, and citizen groups. Adjacent two-story wings house service operations and facilities, carefully positioned alongside neighboring residential buildings to ensure smooth integration within the village fabric.
A particularly exciting part of the project is the youth-focused Club area. Its basement functions as a soundproof music rehearsal room, while the upper level transforms into a concert stage or projection screen, creating a dynamic cultural venue for younger generations.

Celebrating Heritage Through Design
The architectural expression is unambiguous, simple, and dignified, drawing inspiration from the typological and ideological qualities of First Republic Sokol buildings. The design does not merely imitate the past but reinterprets it, offering a fresh yet respectful dialogue between old and new.

Nature, Seniors, and Play: A Multi-Generational Garden
The garden space plays a central role in the project, enhanced by the rebuilding of the existing courtyard Warehouse. This structure now stores garden equipment and accommodates a Seniors' Club, ensuring that all generations have dedicated spaces for engagement and recreation. The garden itself is crowned by a century-old linden tree, providing shade and symbolic continuity, while the multi-purpose sports area is surrounded by a green slope dotted with playful elements, inviting children and families to gather and play.
