Space Timefill Coffee Shop: A Vintage Minimalist Haven by SAISA STUDIO
Space Timefill Coffee Shop blends vintage aesthetics and modern minimalism, redefining café design within an adaptive reuse framework.
Transforming an Old Space into a Modern Café
Located in the heart of Cheongju, South Korea, Space Timefill Coffee Shop is a stunning example of how thoughtful design can transform an aged residential complex into a contemporary gathering place. Designed by SAISA STUDIO, led by Junsu Lee, this 165 m² café blends vintage aesthetics with modern minimalism, creating a welcoming space that resonates with its urban context. Completed in 2024, the project reimagines a once-forgotten structure as a vibrant social hub while maintaining its architectural heritage.

The Design Vision: Breaking Boundaries Between Old and New
Situated in a quiet alley lined with timeworn buildings, Space Timefill Coffee Shop embraces its location’s rich history. The design philosophy emphasizes fluidity, eliminating boundaries between the café’s interior and exterior. The façade retains its unfinished aesthetic, echoing the building’s past, while glass walls invite light and transparency, symbolizing a seamless connection with the outside world.

The café’s name, “Space Timefill,” reflects its purpose as a place where visitors can take a pause, filling their time with meaningful moments in a warm and welcoming environment.

Challenges of Renovating an Aging Structure
Renovating a decades-old shopping mall brought unique challenges, including structural wear, outdated walls and ceilings, and deteriorated finishing materials. SAISA STUDIO approached these obstacles as opportunities, preserving and reinterpreting the building’s imperfections to maintain its authenticity.

The design incorporates vintage exposed walls, original textures, and carefully chosen modern materials to create a harmonious balance between old and new. This collaboration of elements celebrates the building’s history while introducing a fresh, contemporary identity.

Interior Design: Vintage Minimalism Meets Warm Modernity
The interior of Space Timefill Coffee Shop is a testament to vintage minimalist coffee shop design, where every detail contributes to an atmosphere of warmth and simplicity. Exposed walls, finished with textured aesthetic paints, serve as a backdrop for the carefully curated wooden elements. The patterned wood finishes exude a natural charm, creating an inviting ambiance for guests.

Large glass panels installed above the walls allow natural light to filter into the space, enhancing its airy and open quality. The interplay of light and shadow transforms the café throughout the day, offering visitors a dynamic experience.

A Flexible Space for All
The layout of Space Timefill Coffee Shop caters to a diverse clientele, from solo visitors to groups of friends. Tables of varying sizes are thoughtfully arranged to accommodate different needs, ensuring comfort and functionality.

One of the café’s standout features is the raised platform and staircase, which provides an elevated vantage point. This unique element not only enhances the spatial dynamics but also encourages interaction, as visitors can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the café while relaxing in a cozy setting.

Merging Interior and Exterior
The boundary between the café’s interior and exterior dissolves with the use of full-height glass walls. These transparent surfaces visually connect the café to its surroundings while allowing light to flood the space. This approach blurs the lines between inside and outside, making the café feel larger and more integrated with its urban environment.

Conclusion: A Modern Interpretation of Timeless Design
Space Timefill Coffee Shop by SAISA STUDIO is more than just a café; it is a dialogue between past and present, tradition and innovation. Through its vintage minimalist design, the project transforms an aged structure into a contemporary cultural space that invites connection, creativity, and comfort.

The café’s thoughtful integration of vintage elements, warm materials, and modern spatial planning makes it a standout example of adaptive reuse in architecture. Space Timefill Coffee Shop not only revitalizes its neighborhood but also redefines the possibilities of café design in urban settings.
