Stairway House by Bang Keun YOU: A Sculptural Mountain Retreat in South Korea

Located high on a terraced hillside in South Korea, Stairway House by Bang Keun YOU seamlessly blends architecture with topography. With its minimalist geometry and nature-inspired material palette, the 119-square-meter residence is a poetic response to its dramatic surroundings — a quiet retreat where movement, light, and landscape are central design elements.

A Site Defined by Nature and Elevation

Perched at 520 meters above sea level, Stairway House occupies a steep mountainside reminiscent of tiered rice fields. From this elevated location, the home enjoys unobstructed 360-degree panoramic views. To the south, the distant South Sea lies roughly 50 kilometers away, while to the north, the site is framed by a mountain with ancient stone retaining walls and dense forest cover to the west. The access road winds steeply upward before descending past other new residences, ultimately ending in a secluded cul-de-sac — the perfect setting for an architectural retreat designed for contemplation and quiet living.

Architectural Concept: Movement as Form

The clients, a humble and open-minded couple, gave the architect complete creative freedom. Without specific programmatic constraints, Bang Keun YOU developed a design narrative around the rhythm of daily life and movement. This process-oriented approach shaped a unique spatial configuration: linear bars that curve organically into the landscape, becoming both structure and circulation.

The central gesture — a sweeping curved stairway — becomes the architectural spine, rising like a folding fan to connect the ground level with the second floor. This sculptural stair not only defines the entry sequence but also introduces a spatial ambiguity between path and form. The linearity of the square bar elements ensures clarity, while the curvatures integrate the architecture into the terrain, anchoring it gently into place.

Spatial Experience: Flow, Light, and Openness

Stairway House unfolds as a continuous spatial journey. On the eastern side, solid walls are removed to welcome in the soft morning light, particularly in the sleeping quarters. The program flows naturally: from bedrooms to living areas and on to a guest room located above the dining space. Boundaries between rooms are minimal, favoring transparency and connection over compartmentalization.

Terraces and balconies emerge from various points — extending the living room, bedrooms, and guest area outward — encouraging an ongoing interaction between interior and exterior. Strategically placed skylights and light apertures modulate daylight throughout the day and across seasons, enriching the simple spatial layout with a dynamic play of illumination and shadow. These variations enhance the serene ambiance of the long and narrow interior.

Material Language: A Dialogue with Stone and Landscape

Materiality in Stairway House is deeply rooted in context. The project draws inspiration from the rough stone retaining walls on site, translating their essence into the building’s square masses. This influence materializes as a textured façade with stone patterns reimagined using modern construction techniques. Glass blocks are inserted into the stone-like cladding, creating luminous interstices that filter natural light into the interior, while visually lightening the heavy stone aesthetic.

The terracotta-tinted surfaces peel away in places, revealing the layered construction and connecting the home back to the earth. This “genetic homogeneity” between site and structure is a central theme: the architecture does not merely sit on the land, it evolves from it — both formally and materially.
