“Station Road Extensions by Delve Architects: Sustainable Semi-Detached Home Transformations in Godalming”
Delve Architects transformed two semi-detached Godalming cottages with timber-frame extensions, sustainable materials, bespoke interiors, and light-filled, family-friendly, energy-efficient living spa
Delve Architects have completed a stunning two-storey rear and side extension across two semi-detached cottages in Godalming, Surrey. Designed for neighbours Tom & Claire and Anushka & Toby, the project showcases modern timber frame construction, sustainable materials, and bespoke interiors, blending classic and contemporary aesthetics on a single site.
With a combined budget of £500k, the project turned previously dark and cramped spaces into light-filled, family-friendly homes, while significantly improving insulation, energy efficiency, and thermal comfort.

Collaborative Planning and Design
Rather than submit separate planning applications—which would have been unsuccessful due to right-of-light issues—Delve Architects approached the project as a joint application, allowing both extensions to be approved simultaneously. Director Ed Martin, local to Godalming and experienced with planning through his award-winning Woodthorpe Stables renovation, facilitated a smooth approval process.
The design process enabled each household to maintain its unique style and functional requirements while coordinating elements like the rear projections along the party wall.

Design Concept: Two Unique Extensions
Number 5: This home embraces a timeless, classic style, featuring oak beams, a shaker-style kitchen, and green-grey Critall steel doors and windows.
Number 6: In contrast, this home presents a contemporary timber-framed extension, highlighted by large fixed glazing panels and eco-friendly red Viroc cladding, creating a modern aesthetic while maximizing natural light.
Both homes emphasize spacious, light-filled living areas, addressing the previous issues of dark and cold interiors.

Sustainable Materials and Craftsmanship
Working with CAB Workshop, Delve Architects incorporated sustainably sourced Red Grandis timber for bespoke doors, windows, and timber-frame structures. Key sustainable strategies included:
- High air-tightness and insulation for energy-efficient timber-frame construction
- Reuse of brickwork from demolition, contributing to circular design principles
- Enhanced EPC ratings and reduced energy bills through improved thermal performance
These measures ensured comfortable, eco-friendly homes that align with both modern sustainability standards and family needs.

Interior and Family-Friendly Features
The extensions provide:
- Expanded kitchens and living spaces
- Additional bedrooms for growing families
- Light-filled interiors with timber accents
- Bespoke cabinetry, shelving, and joinery
By transforming previously cold and cramped interiors, the project enhances family living and functionality while preserving the charm of the original cottages.

Client Testimonials
Ed Martin, Director, Delve Architects: "It's rare to deliver two extensions on one site simultaneously. Each home has its own distinct personality, reflecting the unique needs of the families while maintaining cohesion."
Anushka & Toby, Homeowners, No. 6: "We were concerned planning wouldn't allow a two-storey extension, but working collaboratively with our neighbours and Delve Architects has been a huge success. The homes are perfect for our growing families."
