A Monumental Public Shelter in Brescia’s Revitalized Quarry Landscape

Stones Venue Public Shelter, designed by Associated Architects, is a striking public installation in Brescia, Italy, located within Parco delle Cave—a former sand mining site now transformed into a vibrant green space. This architectural intervention was initiated by Consorzio Produttori Marmo Botticino Classico in collaboration with the Municipality of Brescia, aiming to honor the city’s quarrying heritage and showcase the region’s diverse stone materials.

An Architectural Tribute to Bergamo and Brescia’s Stone Legacy

The shelter was meticulously crafted using nine distinct stone types, symbolizing the rich geological and cultural identity of Bergamo and Brescia. Over a span of five years, eleven companies contributed to this monumental project by donating discarded stone blocks, embracing the principles of circular construction and sustainable architecture.

The featured stones include:

  • Bergamo Stones: Arabescato Orobico, Ceppo di Gré, Nuvolato
  • Brescia Stones: Breccia Aurora, Breccia Damascata, Breccia Oniciata, Fiorito Chiaro, Marmo Classico di Botticino, Porfido

Structural Design: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

At the heart of Stones Venue’s design is a steel-framed roof, supported by nine monolithic stone pillars—each sculpted from a different variety of local stone. An additional tenth pillar, crafted from Marmo di Botticino Classico with a Ceppo di Gré graft, serves as an artistic centerpiece by Francesco Paterlini, symbolizing the unity of Bergamo and Brescia within a shared landscape.

Anchored with steel plates, the structural elements create a contemporary yet timeless space, paying homage to the region’s industrial heritage while integrating modern architectural techniques. The open design fosters a public gathering space, offering shade, shelter, and a place for reflection.

A Public Space Rooted in Sustainability and Community

Beyond its architectural significance, Stones Venue represents a commitment to sustainability, repurposing natural stone waste into a functional urban landmark. This initiative highlights the circular economy in architecture, demonstrating how local materials and historical craftsmanship can be reimagined for contemporary public use.

With its minimalist aesthetic, robust materiality, and symbolic storytelling, Stones Venue stands as a testament to Brescia’s cultural heritage, creating a meaningful space for community engagement, artistic expression, and urban regeneration.
