Sustainable Home Renovation with Timber Cladding: AR House by Atlas Architecture
A sustainable home transformation in the Netherlands, unifying extensions with timber cladding to support aging in place.
The AR House in Wieringerwerf, Netherlands, designed by Atlas Architecture, exemplifies a thoughtful transformation of a home to support aging in place. Combining sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic cohesion, the project integrates modern elements while maintaining a deep connection to its rural surroundings.

The Challenge: Enhancing an Aging Home
The project revolved around the needs of an elderly couple looking to adapt their home for single-level living without leaving their cherished village. Previous extensions had left the original structure fragmented, requiring a unified architectural solution that prioritized both aesthetics and practicality.

Design Approach: Unifying Old and New
To address the home's disjointed appearance, Atlas Architecture chose to reclad the entire structure using Platowood Frake profiles, a sustainable and low-maintenance timber material. This hydrothermal modification process ensures dimensional stability, excellent insulation, and longevity.
Rounded façade corners and stacked profiles created a seamless transition, achieving an organic flow from one section to another. The cohesive timber character enhances the home's visual harmony and tactile warmth.

Connecting with Nature
Large sliding doors, crafted from the same Platowood material, extend the interior into the garden. A newly added pergola, featuring an aluminum structure with cast-in-place concrete columns, bridges the old and new extensions, providing a shaded, versatile outdoor space.
The pergola curves gracefully around the garden, its metallic reflections and shadow play echoing the natural surroundings. These design choices enable the home to transform dynamically with the changing light and weather.

Sustainability at the Core
The use of Platowood Frake demonstrates a commitment to eco-conscious architecture. The timber’s durability reduces maintenance needs, while its thermal properties improve energy efficiency, aligning with sustainable living principles.

The AR House renovation epitomizes how architecture can preserve emotional ties to a place while evolving to meet contemporary needs. By blending sustainable materials and thoughtful design, Atlas Architecture has created a home that is as practical as it is beautiful.
