Temporary Installation at a Mountain River by atelier VRAC — A Harmonious Dialogue Between Nature, Light, and Geometry
A circular eco-installation by atelier VRAC harmonizing light, geometry, and nature along Romania’s mountain river, promoting sustainability and reflection.
Nestled along the serene Moașa Sebeșului River in Sebeșu de Sus, Romania, the Temporary Installation at a Mountain River by atelier VRAC is a poetic architectural gesture that celebrates the fragile balance between human creativity and untouched wilderness. Designed in 2023 as part of the Făgăraș Fest, the installation embodies a symbolic and spatial response to the ongoing ecological challenges that threaten mountain rivers across the Carpathian region.

Architecture Inspired by Nature and Awareness
The concept emerged from a deep desire to activate and honor the Moașa Sebeșului River, a vital tributary of the Sebeș River flowing from the Făgăraș Mountains. This project not only serves as a festival landmark but also as a statement of ecological consciousness, reinforcing the Conservation Carpathia Association’s mission to protect the region by designating it as a national park zone.
In an era where rivers are exploited by micro-hydropower plants, urban sprawl, and waste pollution, atelier VRAC sought to create a structure that leaves no physical scar on the land. Instead, it engages the natural flow of the river with minimal intervention—an architecture of empathy, temporality, and awareness.

A Circle in Motion: Geometry Meets Wilderness
The installation takes the form of a perfect circle, a timeless geometric symbol that contrasts with the organic fluidity of the water. The circular design defines an open-air “room”—a sacred spatial boundary that gently detaches visitors from the river’s linear rhythm, inviting them into an intimate, meditative encounter with the environment.
Constructed from slender vertical poles crowned with solar light globes and encircled by a light textile canopy, the installation creates a floating atmosphere of lightness and translucency. Despite its geometric precision, it remains gentle and respectful to its setting, allowing the river to flow freely beneath, untouched and unconfined.

An Invitation to Explore and Reflect
The experience of the installation is designed for discovery. Children easily slip beneath the delicate fabric, while adults must bow slightly—an act of humility before entering this ephemeral space. Inside, an angled pontoon emerges as a platform of stillness, accessible only through the water. For a fleeting moment, the river’s current slows, creating a pause—a moment of reflection and immersion.
The textile canopy stretches across both riverbanks, brushing softly against the vegetation, integrating the manmade structure with the wild. Adjacent to this circular space, a stone crossing spans the river, connecting the installation to the festival’s camping area. The stepping stones are intentionally spaced, urging visitors to move mindfully—each step a gesture of connection with nature.
At night, the solar globes emit a gentle, ambient glow, illuminating the installation with sustainable energy. The minimal light design enhances the atmosphere, maintaining the darkness and serenity of the forest while guiding visitors across the water.

Architecture as Play, Pause, and Encounter
The installation embodies interaction and discovery—a playground for children, a contemplative retreat for adults. It becomes a symbolic heart of the festival, uniting people through moments of joy, stillness, and curiosity. Whether leaping from the pontoon, resting quietly, or wandering aimlessly through the shallow waters, every movement becomes part of a collective dance between human presence and natural rhythm.
Through simplicity, geometry, and light, atelier VRAC transforms a mountain river into an artistic dialogue between architecture and ecology—a temporary gesture with timeless resonance.
