The Black Taj – The Broken Tomb
A poetic reinterpretation of the Taj Mahal through contemporary architecture — The Black Taj embodies Shah Jahan’s eternal grief.
Amidst the timeless grandeur of the Taj Mahal, The Black Taj – The Broken Tomb reimagines one of history’s most romantic legends through contemporary architectural design. Conceived as a symbolic counterpart to the Taj, the project The Black Taj - The Broken Tomb - PUVM49 envisions a monument across the Yamuna River — a dark, fractured form representing Shah Jahan’s broken heart.
Created by Marta, Chiara, and Marta, this visionary concept won an Honorable Mention in The Black Taj competition. It draws upon Mughal architectural geometry and emotional symbolism to bridge the past and the present, the seen and the felt, the tangible and the spiritual.

Concept and Symbolism
The Black Taj stands as a memorial of sorrow and eternal love. The tower-like structure rises as a fractured monolith — a shatter that embodies Shah Jahan’s pain after losing Mumtaz Mahal. The architectural void at its center symbolizes a cracked heart, eternally facing the Taj Mahal across the river.
This void becomes a window of remembrance, one that frames the vision of Mumtaz’s resting place. Through this lens, the emperor continues to watch over her — a metaphor for love transcending mortality. The contrast between the pure marble of the Taj and the dark materiality of its counterpart evokes the duality of life and death, light and shadow, fullness and absence.
Architectural Expression
The proposal follows the cosmic geometry of Mughal architecture, blending sacred forms — the square (earthly world), octagon (human realm), and circle (divinity). Each level of the Black Taj transitions through these forms, creating an architectural ascension from the material to the spiritual.
Externally, the building is wrapped in an intricate mashrabiya façade, inspired by Islamic patterns. This porous skin diffuses light and shadow, offering glimpses of the interior while maintaining a sense of mysticism and privacy. The geometry, drawn from Mughal symmetry, morphs into a contemporary lattice — a skin that breathes and glows under changing sunlight.
Spatial Organization
The monument’s vertical layout mirrors the layers of human memory and emotion:
- Lower levels house Shah Jahan’s false sarcophagus and the real tomb, a silent core representing the depths of grief.
- Mid-levels feature a Mughal Dynasty Museum and History Library, preserving the heritage of the empire that once shaped India’s architectural soul.
- Upper levels open to panoramic terraces, offering views of the Taj Mahal — completing the visual dialogue between the two structures.
The spatial rhythm, from enclosed chambers to open views, reflects an emotional journey — from pain to remembrance to transcendence.

Site and Alignment
Set precisely opposite the Taj Mahal across the River Yamuna, the Black Taj aligns symmetrically with the original monument, maintaining identical proportions and elevation. This alignment underscores their conceptual unity — as if two halves of a whole are forever divided by water, yet visually connected through architectural harmony.
The site plan extends the Mughal charbagh layout, while the reflective surfaces and water channels mirror the symmetry of the Taj complex, symbolizing reflection in both form and memory.
Materiality and Atmosphere
Constructed with dark stone and perforated metal, the monument absorbs light rather than reflecting it — embodying grief and humility. Within, filtered light penetrates through patterned openings, casting ephemeral shadows that animate the tomb interior. These transient patterns represent the passage of time — memory fading and returning, much like love’s enduring echo.
Every architectural gesture within the Black Taj evokes poetic minimalism — restrained yet emotionally charged.
The Emotional Narrative
At its heart, The Broken Tomb is not a monument of death, but of eternal longing. The fractured geometry symbolizes the emperor’s heart torn apart, yet the constant visual link to the Taj Mahal speaks of love beyond the physical world.
By embodying grief in architecture, the Black Taj transforms emotion into structure — where architecture itself becomes memory.
The Black Taj – The Broken Tomb redefines memorial architecture for the modern era. Through geometry, material, and symbolism, it captures the fragility of love and the resilience of remembrance.
In the silence of its perforated walls, light whispers through grief, connecting two monuments — two souls — in a dialogue that transcends time.
