The Book Tower: Redefining Urban Knowledge Spaces through Innovative Architectural Design
A visionary tower of learning and connection—where architecture elevates the library into the heart of urban life.
The Book Tower stands as a transformative emblem in the landscape of architectural innovation, where built form and civic purpose intersect to shape a new kind of urban monument. It is not merely a structure, but a conceptual and cultural statement about how cities can foster knowledge sharing and intellectual growth. By blending the timeless pursuit of learning with the dynamic needs of the 21st-century city, the Book Tower becomes an architectural narrative that speaks to openness, inclusion, and continuous evolution.
The Book Tower is a bold experiment in contemporary library architecture, reimagining the traditional library as an open, inclusive, and dynamic civic landmark. Designed as a new social instrument, this innovative structure becomes a participatory platform where knowledge is not only stored but shared, discussed, and created.

A winner of Libgen 2019, the project was conceived by Jiayong Lu, Zhengshuai Hu, Hua Xing, and Zhiyuan Zhang. At its core, the Book Tower invites every citizen to become a performer of knowledge. It is a space where anyone with something to share—ideas, stories, expertise—can do so openly. In this way, the library evolves into the city's vital think tank, bridging the divide between institutional learning and spontaneous public discourse.
The architectural form rises in a spiraling pyramid, merging public domain and private enclave into a single, continuous experience. Learning spaces are layered upward, guiding visitors through a diverse array of educational activities, exhibitions, and reflection zones. At the same time, large glass façades open up panoramic city views, anchoring knowledge within its urban context.

The tower's program blends self-learning, communication, and creation—the three foundational principles guiding the structure's spatial and symbolic organization. The circulation encourages movement, interaction, and contemplation. The dynamic geometry of the façade allows for daylight control, energy efficiency, and a striking visual identity.
Not only is the Book Tower a feat of structural and spatial innovation, but it also represents a shift in how we imagine public architecture in the information age. It is a contemporary library architecture prototype—a civic hub where learning transcends books and classrooms, and enters the streets, skies, and everyday lives of its citizens.
Through its visionary form and participatory spirit, the Book Tower is more than a library. It’s a stage, a classroom, a forum, and a beacon—where knowledge becomes both anchor and launchpad for a more informed and connected urban society.
