A Compact Culinary Experience Rooted in Coastal Identity
In the heart of Ericeira, a traditional fishing village on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, Atelier Réalité has transformed a generic commercial unit into The Capsule Cafe—a compact yet expressive restaurant space. Designed as a flexible “kitchen project,” the cafe serves as a dynamic platform for rotating chefs and diverse gastronomic experiences.

Merging Local Aesthetics with Contemporary Design
The design is deeply influenced by the village’s coastal identity. Drawing inspiration from the omnipresent blue and white color palette—mirrored in Ericeira's architecture, ocean horizon, and open skies—the cafe reinterprets these elements with a modern edge. The result is a minimal yet expressive space that subtly echoes its surroundings while asserting its own contemporary voice.

Façade and Street Presence: Minimalism That Invites
Despite its modest street-facing elevation, the facade renovation enhances the cafe’s visual accessibility. Two oversized pivoting windows introduce light and openness, transforming the formerly closed frontage into an inviting gesture. Complementary signage and a luminous flag mark the entrance with subtle sophistication.

Spatial Planning: A Compact Interior with Dynamic Flow
Designed with a narrow and elongated footprint, The Capsule Cafe functions as a compact diner. On one side lies an open kitchen and service counter, fostering direct interaction between chefs and guests. Opposite the counter are tables, upholstered sofas, and cozy seating nooks.
At the street-facing end, a prominent La Marzocco espresso machine anchors the bar, accompanied by three prime window seats perfect for coffee rituals and people-watching. Hidden behind a vibrant blue curtain are the technical service areas and restrooms, cleverly integrated into the compact layout.

Materials and Atmosphere: Textural Contrast in a Neutral Envelope
The interior is wrapped in soft light gray tones, applied uniformly across walls, ceilings, and floors, creating a neutral shell that allows signature elements to stand out. Key features include:
- A glazed white tile counter acting as a focal point
- Custom lacquered steel furniture in white
- Blue lighting fixtures and curtains as chromatic accents
- Recycled plastic table tops and stools providing sustainable flair
- Soft nappa leather sofa cushions delivering tactile comfort
Each material and detail is meticulously curated, offering a tactile and visual experience that blends function, aesthetic rigor, and a relaxed vibe.

Light, Texture, and Experience: A Thoughtful Café Interior
From lighting and finishes to ergonomic furniture and layout, every element is tailored to balance casual comfort with architectural precision. The combination of contemporary textures, eco-conscious materials, and a thoughtfully orchestrated palette creates a unique ambiance—at once intimate and open, minimal and expressive.
