Redefining Urban Living on Amsterdam’s Industrial Waterfront

Once dominated by shipyards and towering cranes, Amsterdam’s Buiksloterham district is undergoing a radical transformation. Positioned along the Tolhuis Canal and overlooking the IJ River, The Doors Housing Complex by Space Encounters exemplifies the area's shift from industrial utility to vibrant, mixed-use urbanity. Designed as part of the pioneering Buiksloterham City-Plots masterplan, the project merges sculptural architecture with spatial adaptability, reflecting the district’s progressive ethos.

Sculptural Design Rooted in Flexibility and Light

The housing complex comprises 12 unique apartments, each with floorplans that range from deep to wide, or hybrid configurations that respond to diverse lifestyles. The name The Doors reflects the design's built-in flexibility: each unit includes two front doors, encouraging residents to combine living with working, support multi-generational households, or accommodate future spatial transitions—such as separate living quarters for older children or elderly parents.

Architectural Expression through Materiality and Rhythm

The building’s visual identity is defined by a tripartite composition of horizontal concrete and glass bands intersected by vertical aluminum frames. This interplay between vertical and horizontal elements gives the structure a striking sculptural rhythm. Integrated into the façade are planters for flowers and greenery, enhancing both aesthetics and biodiversity.

The ground-level plinth is finished with glazed white tiles and Ceppo di Gré natural stone, grounding the building in both material richness and durability. In contrast, the upper volumes incorporate transparent glazing with sliding doors, creating strong connections to the outside while providing natural light and ventilation.

Connecting Interiors and Community

The heart of the complex features a lush interior courtyard garden and a signature chocolate-brown spiral staircase. This central atrium—animated with trapezoidal windows—fosters visual and social connections across different floors. Upon entering the building, residents are greeted by a 14-meter-long mural by artist Frederik Næblerød, featuring “planetary animals” that bring whimsy and artistic flair to everyday living.

This seamless integration of art, architecture, and landscape transforms The Doors into more than just a housing project—it becomes a symbol of Amsterdam’s forward-thinking approach to urban regeneration.
