The House in Shōgoin by Koyori: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Modernity
The House in Shōgoin blends tradition and modernity, featuring a residence, shop, and sacred shrine, harmonizing history with contemporary design.
An Architectural Fusion of Residential, Commercial, and Sacred Spaces
Located in the heart of Kyoto, The House in Shōgoin is a distinctive architectural project designed by Koyori Architects. This 292 m² structure masterfully integrates a residential space, a shop, and a shrine, creating a dynamic yet harmonious environment that resonates with both history and contemporary living.
The shrine, a focal point of the project, has been preserved with great care, as it holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. Once a place where the client’s great-grandmother conducted sacred rituals, it remains an important site for worshippers, continuing the legacy of spiritual devotion. The shrine enshrines a deity venerated in a renowned Kansai-region shrine, strengthening its ties to the local community and cultural heritage.

Preserving Heritage Through Architectural Design
This project follows Koyori’s previous work on a residence for a former head representative of Ise Jingu, reinforcing the firm's deep engagement with sacred architecture. The design approach carefully respects the historical significance of the building while seamlessly integrating modern architectural elements.
The interior emphasizes natural materials, with plasterwork finishes that honor traditional textures while enhancing the softness of natural light. Thoughtfully placed openings invite shifting patterns of sunlight throughout the day, enriching the space with warmth and serenity. The result is an atmosphere where tradition and contemporary aesthetics coexist, offering a tranquil retreat from urban life.

A Restored Garden That Enhances the Architectural Experience
The landscape design was equally meticulous, focusing on restoring the garden’s original beauty. By removing unnecessary elements and enhancing its natural features, the revitalized garden now seamlessly integrates with the architecture, reinforcing a sense of calm and harmony. This approach reflects Kyoto’s legacy of minimalist and contemplative garden design, ensuring that the outdoor space becomes an extension of the home’s peaceful ambiance.

A Living Space That Bridges Generations
Throughout the project, Koyori collaborated closely with the client to redefine the living experience, prioritizing comfort, family life, and childcare needs. By blending historic preservation with modern functionality, The House in Shōgoin creates a living environment that not only honors its past but also embraces the future.
