The Stones House by CZWG Architects: A Coastal Masterpiece Inspired by Nature
The Stones House by CZWG Architects is a modern coastal home, blending innovative geometry, sustainability, and breathtaking views of Greatstone-on-Sea
Nestled along the breathtaking coastline of Greatstone-on-Sea, The Stones House by CZWG Architects is an architectural marvel that harmonizes seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Situated between Dungeness and Greatstone, this contemporary residence is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering an unparalleled connection to the coastal landscape.

Context and Location
Positioned at a key bend along a scenic seafront road, The Stones House is part of a strip of detached beachfront homes that have evolved from the mid-20th century to the present day. The site’s proximity to sand dunes, chalk cliffs, and the open sea heavily influenced the design approach, ensuring the home integrates effortlessly into its surroundings while offering stunning panoramic views.

Architectural Concept: Inspired by Land and Sea
The architectural concept takes cues from the coastal topography, marine vistas, and adjacent roadway. The street-facing elevation features sloping, curved salt-glazed brickwork, forming a solid yet sculptural screen that accentuates the bend in the road. In contrast, the seafront elevation embraces expansive glazing and timber cladding, establishing a direct visual and physical connection to the sea.

Dynamic Spatial Experience and Innovative Design
CZWG Architects have crafted a dynamic composition of truncated triangular forms and overlapping rhomboids, strategically aligning with the site’s best views. This innovative geometry creates a variety of spatial experiences, enhancing the movement through and around the residence.
Despite the relatively large plot extending to the high-water mark, the buildable area was restricted, necessitating a thoughtful approach to space planning. An additional challenge was accommodating car parking and turning provisions on the ground floor without compromising the aesthetic or functional integrity of the home.

Interior Layout: A Seamless Connection with the Landscape
The interior layout is designed to maximize both privacy and exposure to the coastal views. The first floor houses the main living area and the master bedroom suite, offering breathtaking vistas of the English Channel. A cantilevered balcony hovers over the dunes, providing a dramatic outdoor living space that enhances the sensory experience of the surroundings.
A private mezzanine terrace further extends the connection to nature, while the ground floor accommodates additional bedrooms, nestled beneath the dunes for a more intimate and sheltered ambiance. The centerpiece of the seafront elevation is the double-height living space, which boasts a striking truncated triangular window framing the vast seascape. The inclined profile of this area, clad in natural timber, echoes the inverted hulls of ships, a subtle homage to the maritime history that defines the region.

Sustainability and Materiality
CZWG Architects have prioritized sustainability and material responsiveness in their design. The use of salt-glazed brickwork, timber cladding, and high-performance glazing ensures durability in the face of the coastal climate while reducing environmental impact. The integration of natural ventilation, passive solar design, and energy-efficient lighting further enhances the home’s sustainability credentials.

A Landmark of Coastal Architecture
The Stones House is a remarkable example of modern coastal architecture, skillfully balancing aesthetic innovation, environmental sensitivity, and functional efficiency. With its distinctive geometry, dynamic spatial flow, and deep-rooted connection to the natural landscape, this residence stands as a beacon of contemporary design on the shores of Greatstone-on-Sea.
