The Vigorous Thick Wall by XFRAME – Innovative Office Design in Shanghai
The Vigorous Thick Wall by XFRAME transforms Shanghai offices with flexible workspaces, innovative design, and collaborative, multifunctional environments for modern tech teams.
Located at the prestigious Lumina Center on Shanghai’s West Bund, The Vigorous Thick Wall by XFRAME redefines the modern office for Tezign, a leading Internet and AI technology company. Completed in 2023, this 2,400 m² office embodies a flexible, dynamic workspace that encourages creativity, collaboration, and freedom of choice in working styles. Designed under the leadership of Yuwei Wang, the project embraces the client’s vision of a “school-campus-like” environment where employees can navigate multiple spatial scenarios according to their needs.

The design philosophy treats the entire office environment as a miniature city, segmented into four typologies: Monuments, Dwellings, Streets, and Townhall. Each typology addresses a distinct function within the workspace:
- Monuments: The iconic “Thick Wall” serves as a monumental infrastructure, integrating meetings, informal discussions, live broadcast rooms, storage, and libraries. Its versatile design allows employees to engage with spaces on demand while providing a symbolic centerpiece for the office.
- Dwellings: Flexible wooden boxes and adaptable furniture offer employees autonomy to define their own work environments. These spaces support private discussions, focused work, or quick collaboration without disrupting overall workflow.
- Streets: Acting as interactive corridors, streets facilitate chance encounters and informal communication. The dynamic design allows glimpses into different work areas through circular windows or partially transparent walls, fostering spontaneity and connectivity.
- Townhall: The central multipurpose space functions as a hub for large-scale gatherings, workshops, exhibitions, team-building activities, and casual meetings. Equipped with pantries, meeting rooms, and ancillary facilities, the Townhall emphasizes adaptability for diverse office functions.

The “Thick Wall” concept is central to the office’s identity. By extruding a 3D space from a two-dimensional wall, XFRAME created a multifunctional spine that harmonizes private and communal areas while promoting interaction across the office. Open areas and wooden boxes interspersed throughout the floor plan stimulate creativity, encourage collaboration, and create a visually engaging workspace.

Sustainability, ergonomics, and aesthetic innovation were also key drivers. Materials and furniture were selected for durability and adaptability, while the strategic use of light, voids, and circulation paths enhances both comfort and efficiency. The interplay of transparency and enclosure within the Thick Wall design ensures employees can choose between focused work and collaborative engagement seamlessly.

The Vigorous Thick Wall exemplifies XFRAME’s innovative approach to office architecture, creating a workplace that is as flexible and dynamic as the technology company it serves. It is a landmark project that redefines the possibilities of urban office design in Shanghai and sets a new benchmark for adaptable, human-centric workspaces.
