TKA Esplanade by Núcleo de Arquitetura Experimental: A Sculpted Landscape of Industry and Nature
TKA Esplanade blends industrial functionality with natural materials, creating a sculpted, multi-level landscape rooted in Brazil’s regional identity.
In the heart of Brazil’s Serra Gaúcha region, the TKA Esplanade by Núcleo de Arquitetura Experimental (naE) redefines how industrial architecture can seamlessly merge with nature. Designed for a crane manufacturing plant in Flores da Cunha, the 4,200-square-meter project transforms rugged topography into a fluid, contemplative, and functional landscape. This comprehensive intervention orchestrates access routes, landscaped plazas, technical zones, parking areas, and an integrated system of signage and visual identity—all with a clear architectural language rooted in the surrounding context.

Landscape Design as Industrial Identity
The primary challenge of the project was the site's uneven terrain. Rather than viewing this as a constraint, the design team saw it as an opportunity to amplify the region’s natural character. The esplanade unfolds between the elevated industrial pavilion and the RS-122 highway below, with multiple levels cascading along rocky slopes. These transitions aren’t merely functional—they sculpt space in a way that enhances the user experience, creating moments of pause and panoramic observation.
Materials play a key role in reinforcing the connection between built form and site. Basalt rock, raw concrete, and metal elements anchor the design, blending with lush native vegetation. Locally sourced basalt was used not only for paving and retaining structures but also for rammed earth walls, echoing the geological identity of the terrain. This tactile palette is not only sustainable but expressive, establishing a dialogue between industrial infrastructure and ecological integration.

A Plaza of Arrival and Reflection
The most symbolic gesture in the layout is the main esplanade, located at the uppermost and most prestigious point of the site—directly in front of the company’s administrative headquarters. This elevated platform doubles as a formal gathering space and scenic overlook. Here, sawn basalt pavement differentiates pedestrian zones from vehicular paths, while a reflective water mirror expands the view and enhances the serene atmosphere.
The plaza’s spatial design is further enriched with sculptural furniture elements, such as the “Semente” tables—a collection developed by naE that highlights native materiality and minimalist form. These functional art pieces reinforce the project's tactile sensibility and serve as focal points within the landscape.

Layered Spaces and Social Nodes
Adjacent to the main plaza, a more intimate gathering space rests beneath the shade of a mature cherry tree. Bordered by a low retaining wall that also functions as a continuous bench, this garden-like area provides respite and community, enhanced by vegetation and carefully curated outdoor furnishings. The benches by METALCO, with their warm wooden seats and black powder-coated frames, complement the project's signage system and contribute to a cohesive aesthetic.
Across the esplanade, transitional spaces between levels are framed by stone retaining walls and staircases. These create fluid pathways for movement and encourage users to meander through the space, revealing framed views of the valley and built environment at every step.

A Unified System of Materials and Signage
Throughout the project, attention to detail remains consistent. Paving strategies vary by zone, with bush-hammered and sawn basalt used in high-traffic and prestigious areas, while modular concrete blocks reinforce functional pathways. Drainage grates and signage elements—crafted from basalt and metal—follow the same design logic, ensuring durability and cohesion.
The visual identity and signage system, also designed by naE, adds another layer of refinement. Directional totems and informational plaques in stone and sheet metal are integrated into walls and landscape features. Subtle embedded lighting ensures these elements remain legible at night while maintaining the site’s elegant restraint.

Architecture Rooted in Regional Identity
More than just an industrial landscape design, the TKA Esplanade is a model of environmental responsiveness and material honesty. By drawing upon the local geology and celebrating the texture of raw materials, the project creates a powerful sense of place. At every scale—from the macro planning of access ramps and plazas to the micro detailing of signage and benches—there’s a deep respect for the natural topography and cultural context of Serra Gaúcha.
Ultimately, the TKA Esplanade demonstrates how landscape architecture and industrial design can converge to elevate the user experience, reframe corporate identity, and honor the land beneath.
