The School of Arts in Valladolid, located adjacent to the Convent of Las Carmelitas Descalzas, is a stunning example of contemporary architecture inspired by its historical context. The project, which is situated on land that was once part of the convent's orchards, seeks to strike a balance between respecting its heritage and providing a space for creativity, youth, and dreams.

The design of the building is characterized by a duality of materials and forms. The exterior is clad in black brick, which creates a mystifying atmosphere that surrounds and protects the inner world of creation. The interior, on the other hand, is a technological space that is white and bright, with formal allusions to industrial architecture, production, and creation.

The layout of the School of Arts is based on traditional courtyard architecture, which is inspired by the adjoining convent. The two courtyards organize the classrooms and workshops, respectively. The first courtyard articulates the classroom area on two levels, while the other organizes the workshops under a folded concrete shell. The shell is constricted into a straight outline in the façade, folding into itself as it falls into the courtyard, resulting in large windows that overlook the patio. This creates a broken profile that is perfect for students to share their experiences in a central space, as an agora for young, dynamic, and versatile creation.

The patios are versatile spaces that can be used for exhibitions, play, or interaction, updating this traditional typology. The lobby is the point of intersection between the different users of the building. It regulates the entrance and exit, but also becomes a meeting place, where common programs such as the library or the cafeteria are located. This space features a double height associated with the classroom’s patio, where meetings and events can be held.

In addition to the stunning architecture, the School of Arts in Valladolid also provides a small welcoming square to the city. This creates a meeting space for young people and citizens alike. The small square, with oversized letters forming the ART sign, will allow students to sit down, chat, eat a sandwich, or have fun. The building itself is a background, and the students themselves do the activity that will act as a claim for the rest of the city.

Overall, the School of Arts in Valladolid is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture that pays homage to its historical context while providing a space for creativity, youth, and dreams.
