Urban Park Renovation: Transforming Peace Parks Gate 6
The article discusses the transformative renovation of Peace Parks Gate 6 by Atelier Z+, blending urban openness with historical preservation in Shanghai.
In the heart of Hong Kou Qu, China, the renovation of Peace Parks Gate 6 stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful urban park renovation. Spearheaded by Atelier Z+ and beautifully captured through the lens of photographer Min Yang, this project showcases how modern design can honor a city's history while welcoming its future. Completed in 2022, the renovation covers an area of 960 m² and involves a detailed redesign of the park's entrance, blending urban openness with the rich memories of the park's past.

Historical Context and Design Vision
Originally established in 1958 as Tilan Park and renamed Peace Park a year later, this urban oasis ranks as the third-largest park within the central city's Inner-Ring Road. The renovation of Tianbao Road's entrance aimed not just to update its aesthetics but to deepen its connection with the community, embodying the theme of urban openness. Atelier Z+'s design preserved the spatial layout characterized by the harmonious interplay between the park's plaque wall and the towering plane trees, which frames the entrance plaza.

Detailed Renovation Process
Preserving Memory through Modern Techniques
The renovation focused on in-situ reconstruction, employing the same-color dry-laid rubble stone walls complemented by cor-ten steel plate park plaques. This approach maintained the visual and emotional link to the park's history while introducing modern elements. A new addition, a flowing water feature garden, was introduced to enhance the legacy of the entrance, creating a serene welcoming space for visitors.

Redefining Spaces with Landscape Design
By dismantling the former guardhouse, the renovation opened up additional space, allowing for the introduction of varied-height rubble stone retaining walls. These walls, together with the plaque wall, redefine the entrance plaza, guiding visitors from the bustling street into the tranquil park. The strategic planting of Acer serratus and the retention of two significant plane trees further tie the renovated entrance to its green surroundings.

Integrating Sustainability and Accessibility
A critical aspect of urban park renovation is sustainability and accessibility. The Peace Parks Gate 6 project excels in both, transforming the entrance plaza into a "pocket park" named "Yuanyuan" (Wall Garden) that is accessible 24/7. This move not only enhances the park's green space but also provides a valuable community resource that encourages engagement and connection.

The Impact of Thoughtful Urban Park Renovation
The renovation of Peace Parks Gate 6 by Atelier Z+ is a shining example of how urban park renovations can significantly impact a community. By blending historical preservation with modern design, the project has transformed a simple park entrance into a vibrant urban node that invites interaction, reflection, and appreciation of nature. This project not only enhances the aesthetic and functional aspects of Peace Park but also serves as an inspiring model for future urban park renovations worldwide.
The transformation of Peace Parks Gate 6 illustrates the profound potential of urban park renovations to rejuvenate public spaces, making them more inclusive, sustainable, and reflective of the community's history and aspirations.
